You knew it was coming, "Paranormal Activity 4" will be released on October 19th this year, and the teaser trailers have started to roll out. I, for one, am a huge fan of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise up to this point. The only thing that I haven't liked so far is the way that part 3 ended, everything else up until that last 15-20 minutes was great, but that last act killed it for me. It didn't kill the entire series, but it did take me out of that movie when I first saw it. I'm definitely looking forward to part 4 hitting theaters this October and clearly I'm not the only one if they keep making these flicks.
These flicks are proof that anyone with a camera can go out and make a movie and if it's decent enough, you can jump start a career in movie making. Just like "The Blair Witch Project" did it years ago, the guys behind these flicks figured out a way to actually scare the audience by creating atmosphere and tension rather than creeping us out with music or cheap scares. I know it's getting old that these studios are just pumping out sequel after sequel, but I don't mind it when they keep the sequels grounded. These are still made on extremely low budgets and still bring in the viewers, and as long as that happens we'll continue to see one every year. You can kind of compare this to the "SAW" series, but the difference here is that while the "SAW" movies didn't have a huge budget towards the end, they had a much bigger budget than any of the "Paranormal Activity" flicks have had. And on top of that, the "SAW" movies got too big for their own good and eventually toppled. The thing that made the "SAW" movies great was that low-budget, gritty feel of the movies, but once they started throwing buckets of money at them, they went down hill. That's not to say that the $3 mil and $5 mil that Paranormal Activity 2 and 3 got respectively, isn't a lot, but it wasn't used to grow the set pieces or turn them into something they aren't. Now that's not to to say I'm not a fan of the "SAW" movies, because I definitely am, I'm just saying that just because they keep pumping these movies out, doesn't necessarily mean that they are going to be worse as time goes on. Sure sequels rarely live up to the originals, but so far these guys are doing a decent job.
