Kevin Smith Is A Terrorist

Ok, that title is a little misleading, he’s not a terrorist, he’s apparently a FAT terrorist according to Southwest Airlines. Over the weekend director, and sometimes actor, Kevin Smith, was escorted off of a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to Burbank after flying up there earlier that morning for a live SModcast. I’m not going to take the time to bore you with my summarization of what went down on said flight because Smith himself took to his Twitter, his Blog and more importantly, a special edition of SModcast which he recorded as soon as he got home that night.

Essentially Southwest booted him off of the flight for no good reason, at first only telling him that he was a “security risk”, which in my eyes means terrorist, and then dancing around using the word “fat” as the reasoning. Now I’ll come out and say that I am a fan of Smith’s work and his writing/speaking, the guy knows how to tell a story and could tell me I had terminal cancer and I’d probably find it amusing, but I tried to be un-bias in my thoughts on this issue. Is Kevin smith “fat”? Yes, he’s definitely a larger man and by the definition of “fat”, I guess he fits that. Is he morbidly obese? I would have to say no. Sure the weight issue is not good for his health, it’s not good for anyone’s health to be overweight, but I don’t think that makes him “morbidly” obese. Should he have been kicked off the plane? Absolutely not… and here’s why.

I don’t fly that often, but when I do I, like a lot of other people in the world, find it uncomfortable to be seated next to someone that invades my personal space. And I’m not even talking about a fat person, it could be anyone that spills over into my seat area, whether that means actual body parts like an elbow because you don’t know etiquette when sharing an armrest, or the fact that you feel like sitting spread eagle in your chair, thus cramming your legs against mine… Or even personal belongings spilling over onto me, whatever it is, nobody enjoys being crammed into the tiny airplane seats with all your crap pushing them further into the corner. So with that said, I see the airlines concerns when 1 customer is making another feel uncomfortable, they obviously need to try to make things as comfortable for everyone as they can. The usual test for this sort of thing is the armrest/seatbelt test which basically means if you can put both armrests down and wear the seatbelt (even with an extender, which Smith does not require), then you comply with the rules and should have no problem flying without disturbing the people around you.

Smith passed all of these tests and was still escorted off of the plane for being too fat, which in itself is absolutely ridiculous. No person, whether recognizable or not, should be forced off of a plane after passing a test which determines whether or not they are allowed to fly. If they aren’t going to adhere to the outcome of said test, then they should rethink the test. Maybe the solution is to embarrass large people even more by putting an example seat outside the gate like on a rollercoaster, so you can see if you fit or not before boarding…(sarcasm). So I definitely agree with Smith on everything he’s said regarding the policy and that Southwest was in the wrong for booting him, but now it seems that he’s getting a lot of shit from people for the way he’s handling the situation via his means of communication with the world (Twitter, Blog, SModcast, etc). And I want to touch on that a bit after the jump.

The night when the hottest names in music get together in a big room and stroke each others’ ego for 3 hours. I will say that I am glad that in the past few years or so The Grammys have moved away from the actual awards and been more of a concert showcase. Seeing musicians and celebrities give other musicians awards all night is boring as hell so at least they’ve realized that and made it a little more exciting…

The show opened with Lady Gaga performing her slow version of Poker Face that seems to make at least a cameo in every one of her awards show performances. While I really don’t care for that version of the song, or even the original to be honest… and actually I don’t really care for Lady Gaga, but this performance wasn’t as over the top ridiculous as some of her past ones and Elton John performed with her for the 2nd half of the performance and it was actually really good. So not a bad opening to the show and while I may not like her, she is one of the top artists of the moment so good for her.

After that performance Stephen Colbert came out and opened the show with a few jokes, some funnier than others, and then it went straight into a few awards. I’m going to be honest here, I watched the awards presentations, but I could have cared less. I was mainly in it to watch the performances and see if Kanye West made a fool out of himself, but since it appeared that Kanye may have not been invited, I was only watching for the performances. I did hear on the radio this morning that Beyonce won the most Grammys in a single night of any woman in history, 6 (only 1 during the actual broadcast). If we’re going by big winner during the actual show, Taylor Swift took home at least 2, Best Country Album and Album of the Year. I still don’t get what constitutes “country” these days when people like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift are winning big country awards, they seem more pop to me. And while many people probably think that Beyonce should have won album of the year, Taylor Swift was the best selling female artist of the year and since the music industry is all about how many units you can move, it should be no surprise that she won. And with that, the rest of this article will be about the performances (after the jump). If you want to find a list of winners from last night I’m sure it won’t be too hard.

I caught this on the American Idol Orlando auditions tonight. After one of the contestants made it through to Hollywood, Ryan Seacrest goes to pick up one of the small children and the face this kid makes is priceless. I wish I had a better way to capture it though….

Terminator Salvation and Christian Bale

I wouldn’t say I’m a “fan” of Christian Bale, but I did enjoy him in movies like American Psycho, The Machinist, The Prestige and even Batman Begins, but the more I watch him lately I’m coming to the conclusion that he’s just not a good actor. Ok, ok, I know that Terminator Salvation was not the greatest movie in the world and McG apparently can’t direct his way out of a paper bag, but even the lines that Bale spoke in this movie were just ridiculous.

Terminator Salvation is the 4th film in the series and follows John Connor (Bale) as he tries to rescue Kyle Reese from being killed by the machines, which he has to succeed in doing since Kyle Reese is his father and if he doesn’t survive then Connor cannot send Reese back in time to protect his mother and subsequently knock her up. I get a headache sometimes when trying to piece together everything that has happened in the Terminator series because some of it just doesn’t make sense, like where does Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fit in to all of this?

But anyways, the movie itself wasn’t very good, it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve seen this year, but it wasn’t good. And my biggest complaint about it isn’t even the directing, but the fact that they tried way to hard to pay homage to the past Terminator flicks. I can think of a few instances off the top of my head where they just stole scenes or lines from the previous films. For example, when Marcus Wright first meets Kyle Reese, the first thing Reese says to him is “Come with me if you want to live”, which was uttered by Arnold in part 2 and I believe it was also said by Reese in part 1 (it’s been a while since I’ve seen the original). Then there is scene where Reese and Wright are trying to escape from motorcycle Terminators. Reese and Wright are driving in a modified big rig trying to get away when they notice that the one motorcycle has disappeared, but of course it reappears as it jumps off a bridge and lands in front of the truck they are driving. This is exactly the same as in Terminator 2 when John Connor is being chased by the T-1000 and Arnold takes his bike off the bridge, landing in front of the semi truck. Then of course we get John Connor playing “You Could Be Mine” by Guns N Roses to try to lure out a motorcycle terminator and of course that song was the theme song of the T2. We also get to see him use the sweet computer hacking skills he learned from T2 and hacking ATM machines, to gain access to skynet later in the movie. There are also multiple instances of single handed shotgun pumps which of course Sarah Connor made popular in T2 and the use of molten steel to destroy a Terminator, even the catwalk/shotgun scene in “Salvation” is almost identical to the same scene at the end of T2. It just seemed like they were trying way to hard to make this movie something that it wasn’t. And from what I read, the early leaks of the script were fairly decent, but some how something got lost in translation. Whether that was the director wanting to take things in a different direction or just the director fucking up based on the writing, I don’t know, but the final product is not something I would be proud of.

Adam Lambert and Lady Gaga at the AMA’s

I’ll admit, I watch these award shows no matter how stupid or pointless they are, but I will say that the AMA’s last night were not terrible apart from a few performances, mainly Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert. The whole show was basically performances from a variety of artists like Carrie Underwood, Eminem, Alicia Keys, Keith Urban and even Whitney Houston, just to name a few. And while most of the performances were actually good, I don’t understand how anyone could possibly be a fan of Adam Lambert after that god awful display.

Lets start with the good performances, Carrie Underwood looked hot as usual and her voice was on point. I don’t listen to much country or much pop music but I didn’t mind the song she sung and she looked good doing it. Shakira, on the other hand, looked amazing while singing, but the song was a little weird and her voice just doesn’t do it for me, I don’t know what it is. On the other end of the spectrum, Kelly Clarkson. She sounded amazing as usual, but she looked pretty terrible. I know she’s put on a few pounds in the last few years and there’s nothing wrong with that, but she just did not look good last night. Now someone that is hit or miss, Fergie, she looked amazing last night. Sometimes her face kind of resembles hatchet face from Cry-Baby, while other times she looks incredible, and last night was no hatchet face. I didn’t really care for the Black Eyed Peas performance mainly for the way the guys deliver their verses (Fergie sounded alright). Keith Urban was decent, don’t listen to country so I kinda skipped it same with Whitney Houston, just had no interest. I thought the Eminem/50 Cent performance was pretty good, but I would have liked to see them do a different song, it seems like “Crack a Bottle” is their go-to awards show song. I did like the fact that Eminem did his verse from Drake’s song “Forever”, but how come Drake didn’t actually sing his part? He was obviously there as he presented an award (or announced a performance, I can’t remember). And of course Jay-Z and Alicia Keys brought the house down with Empire State of Mind, which I think is a great song even though I’m not from New York. Janet did well opening the show, was expecting a little more to it, but it was good… I’m sure I missed someone, but I can’t think of them all right now.

Let’s start with Lady Gaga. I can’t say that I hate her music, I think some of the more up beat songs like Poker Face are decent and people seem to enjoy them. I thought Paparazzi was an interesting song, not terrible, but not something I’d put on my iPod. With that said, the songs she sung last night were terrible and she looked and sounded just as bad. I don’t know if it’s just me or what, but Lady Gaga is not an attractive woman. All the weird shit aside, she’s just not attractive and while I think she sounds good on her CD’s, her voice was not that impressive last night. I even thought Whitney Houston sounded better… which she should have, but lately Whitney has fallen off so that was a nice surprise. So yeah, Gaga’s performance started with her wearing some skeleton costume that looked like something out of the Halloween bargain bin and some terrible outfit that looked like it was held together by brown packing tape, it was seriously falling off and very unflattering. And for the 2nd part of the performance she climbed inside a large, clear cube and played the piano… lame.

Everything about the performance was terrible, at least at the VMA performance, she made it interesting y hanging herself at the end and covering herself in blood. This one was just ugly and boring. NEXT!
