Fantasy Factory: Live Your Brand (7/19/10)

Last week Rob was the one living "recklessly", but tonight  it sounds like Drama is going to be the one getting a lesson in living "young & reckless".

Live Your Brand: Rob enlists Chad Ochocinco of the Cincinnati Bengals to teach Drama how to live recklessly.

As much as I thought the episode revolved around Drama and living recklessly, it also showed us a lot more of Big Cat than we have seen in the past. Basically Rob tells Drama that he can't promote a brand called "Young & Reckless" if he doesn't live recklessly. So at the release party for a new shirt design they run into Chad Ochocinco and invite him back to the Fantasy Factory for some antics. I honestly thought Ochocinco would have a lot bigger part of the episode, but he really just came by to ride a bike into the foam pit and bring Rob a trebuchet, which is essentially a catapult of sorts. They launched Lady Drama the Mannequin and he left... that was it. Rob then decided he was going to smash the shit out of Big Cat's car so him and drama took a sledgehammer to the entire thing, basically destroying it. Rob felt bad in the end and told Big Cat that he got carried away and would make things right by buying him a new car.

The car was the best part of the episode. Rob bought him an old caprice that was painted like a striped tiger/lion or something, but before he revealed what the car actually was it was covered in a huge furry cat head resembling chester cheetah from the Cheetos brand, it was hysterical. They drove it around town and people loved it.

At the very end, Rob and Drama live recklessly by jumping out of a large building into a giant airbag. This was actually pretty cool, I've been bungee jumping and skydiving, but I think it would be really cool to just jump out of a tall building into an airbag with no restrictions. So both Rob and Drama did it and apparently that was enough for Rob to allow Drama to continue selling a line called "Young & Reckless". Overall I thought it was a pretty good episode, but that car man, I was seriously in tears... good shit.

Westcoast Baseball Trip – Tickets Purchased

Since we're leaving in less than a week, and the theme of the posts today seems to be baseball, I figured I'd give an update on our trip.

We're flying out of Chicago early next Tuesday and will make it out to LA around 2:30PM (we have a layover in Houston). We'll then drop our bags off at a friends place and head over to Anaheim to watch the Angels take on the Dodgers that night. The next day we're just going to hang out in LA with our buddy and see the sights, I've been there before but P hasn't so I'm sure we'll be very touristy.

The day after that we also have nothing going on, but are going to make our way up to San Francisco/Oakland and check that out before we go to the Oakland vs. Pirates game on Friday the 25th, and from then on out it's a pretty packed schedule. We have San Francisco vs Boston on Saturday the 26th. After that game we're gonna try to make it at least half way back to LA because we have the Dodgers vs. Yankees game on the 27th and then on the 28th it's down to San Diego to see the Padres play the Rockies and on the 29th it's back up to LA to fly back home.

I think it's gonna be a fun trip. We're going to be pretty busy which is a good thing, I'm not one who really likes to have downtime while on vacation (unless of course that is what the vacation is about, like our Mexico trip). It's going to be interesting to see if we can make it to all these places in the California traffic, but I'm sure we'll manage just fine. It's also nice that we have friends in both LA and San Diego that we'll get to see. I only hope that I can get the people sitting in the seats next to us to give me their real tickets to the games since all of ours were "Print at Home" tickets due to how fast we planned the trip.

Outrage Over Toyota Sign at Wrigley Field

I didn't really want to comment on this issue because I know I'm probably in the minority here and will get a lot of shit for it, but honestly I don't see what the big deal is over the Toyota sign that was installed over the left field bleachers at Wrigley Field.

I've been a Cubs fan most of my life, I will admit that growing up I was more of a Sox fan, but generally I'm just a fan of baseball. I'm not one of those Cubs fans that goes out of my way to give Sox fans shit or talk down to them for liking the team, I have no problem going to Comiskey... err, US Cellular Field (still hate that name) and would actually love to head down there for a game if anyone would go with me... I've played the game my whole life and just generally enjoy the sport.

So with that said I want to talk about the Ricketts family and the Cubs. So the Ricketts family bought the team for around $900 million and apparently some fans think that this change in ownership means an instant change in the team. Cubs fans have been let down season after season when the Cubs fail to make it to the World Series (and even the playoffs most seasons) while every other Chicago team has now won a championship in the past 25 years. Ok, yes, it sucks that the Cubs haven't won a world series in over 100 years, but I don't get why people automatically think the sale of the team is going to turn them around. Not to defend the Ricketts family and I've never run a baseball team, but I feel like there is a lot more to do behind the scenes in your first year of ownership than wiping out the organization and starting over...

Apparently one of the first things you have to do is put up advertising around a stadium that has been free of most advertising forever... and this is causing a lot of people to get upset. A friend of mine is arguing that they are ruining Wrigley Field and he is now planning to never set foot inside the stadium again, all because of 1 "Toyota" sign that they erected in left field and a few posters in the front. I agree that the posters of the players in the front (outside) of the stadium are a little tacky, I don't really think they are that bad as long as they don't turn into giant advertisements for businesses. But to have banners of your star players hanging in the front of the stadium is not a problem for me. As for the "Toyota" sign, I'll admit I was a little angered when I heard they were putting it up in left field, but after seeing it I don't see what the big deal is.

If you're a fan of baseball you know that Wrigley Field and Fenway Park are the 2 oldest stadiums in baseball and there is no better place to watch a game than either of these parks. I would argue for Yankee Stadium as well, but The House that Ruth Built has now been replaced. Thankfully I got to see a game in Old Yankee Stadium a couple years ago before it closed and as much as I dislike the Yankees there's no denying that a piece of baseball history was forever destroyed when those doors closed. That stadium was one of the greatest stadiums in baseball, there's so much history there it's not even funny. And it's because of the history that I'm glad the Ricketts, or someone else, didn't just tear down Wrigley and build a fancy new stadium in its place.

Baseball has always been America's Pastime and while the game itself should be the thing drawing the crowds, Wrigley field and Fenway both have that history that you just can't deny if you're a baseball fan. So back to the sign and advertisements. Would I have liked it if the sign was never there, of course, I think everyone would, but does the fact that the sign is there now change my feelings towards Wrigley Field as a place where baseball history was made? Absolutely not. The atmosphere at Wrigley is not going to change just because one little sign was erected in the outfield. I mean seriously, have you been to any other baseball stadiums and seen the amount of advertising going on? Cubs fans should be happy that it took this long to get 1 advertisement in the outfield (I don't count the underarmour ads on the outfield doors, they are small enough). How many advertisements do you see when you go to Wrigley Field... on the actual field. Honestly I can only think of a couple; the underarmour ads on the outfield doors and the scrolling ad behind the plate (if there are more physical ads let me know). I know there are sponsors for random things like doubles and homeruns and Bud Light sponsors the bleachers, but I don't think there are any huge Bud Light ads inside the park (only outside the bleachers). I would rather hear the Luna Carpet jingle after every double for 5 seconds than be blasted by tons of ads in the outfield, but there's only so many plays you can sell to sponsors.

Hell, even Fenway's outfield is plastered with advertisements and people still go to support their team and organization. One little ad should not turn people off to visiting Wrigley Field. I would even go so far as to say that the entire stadium needs updating and I would welcome it wholeheartedly. Again, I'm not talking about the look of the stadium and the facade, but the amenities within the stadium need a huge overhaul. I know there are dudes out there that love standing shoulder to shoulder with other dudes while they piss in a trough, but personally I would prefer some updated bathrooms and concessions.

Ok, I know I'm jumping around a bit now in this post, but I'm going to wrap it up here by saying that while I don't mind the "Toyota" sign in the outfield I would mind if it opened the doors to putting up tons of other signs out there. And I guess I can see people's point if this did start to happen, but right now it's not, it's just one sign. So until the whole outfield looks like the side of a race car (like the image of Fenway below) I don't see what the big deal is. If that does happen I'll be the first to admit that you guys were right and I'll join your protest, but until then I'm ok with it.

Shaun White Wins Olympic Gold

Shaun White has done it again, last night he took the gold medal in Men's Snowboard Half Pipe at the Winter Olympics. His teammate, Scotty Lago, also earned a spot on the podium and picked up the bronze. If you're not a fan of snowboarding and have no clue who Shaun White is, he's one of the most entertaining, most talented and most recognizable guys in the sport of Snowboard... and Skateboarding! That's right, he's also incredible at skateboarding. Most of his recent accomplishments have all centered around snowboarding due to the fact that there is a Winter Olympics this year, but this kid also holds all sorts of records and recognition in the skateboarding world as well. To this day he's the only skateboarder to ever land a body varial frontside 540, otherwise known as The Armadillo, he was also the first person to ever land a Cab 7 Melon Grab. It's no fluke that this kid is amazing on a board, whether that's a skateboard or a snowboard.

I turned on the Olympics a little late last night to find Shaun White sitting atop the leaderboard with 3 riders left to go, one of which was himself, the other 2 were the 4th place guy (name escapes me at the moment) and Scotty Lago, who is also from the US and was hoping to best his bronze medal status. The 4th place guy and Lago both ended up falling slightly in their final runs which left them unable to topple Shaun White. So after his first run he had already secured his spot at the top and set a record for the highest score ever in mens halfpipe with a 46.8 (beating Ross Powers' previous record of 46.1 in 2002), but that wasn't enough. While sitting atop the starting platform, having already won gold, White wasn't sure what to do. He joked around with his coaching staff that he was just going to ride down the middle of the pipe, but they encouraged him to hit a couple walls and do a few airs and then at the very end throw his double McTwist 1260, dubbed The White Snake (and a million other names now). There were a few swears thrown around by the coaching staff on live TV for which the announcers apologized for, but I'm pretty sure nobody is going to complain. So White took his final run, which was just a victory run and he had no reason to even try, but he did and he did not disappoint. He threw everything he had into that last run and even though it meant nothing he was still able to topple his first run score and secure his name at the top of the record books with a 48.4.

So Congratulations to Shaun White and Scotty Lago on your Olympic medals.

Blackhawks Get Caught With Their Shirts Off

Seriously, this is really news this morning in Chicago? I guess a few players from the Chicago Blackhawks went out over the weekend (actually I have no clue when these pictures were actually taken, but they just leaked) and rented a limo to roll around the city in, but now the pictures are apparently causing quite a stir... for absolutely no reason!

The picture at the top of this article shows Patrick Kane hanging out in a limo with a few girls (which the radio made sound like strippers, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that these girls are not strippers) just having a good time on the town. There doesn't appear to be anything illegal going on here, all of the guys are of age now, I don't see any drugs or anything inappropriate going on in the pictures.... So a bunch of dudes took their shirts off in a limo, that's not a crime, that's just a bunch of guys going out and having a good time. Now I may have questioned it if it were just a bunch of a dudes in a limo with their shirts off, but it's a group of friends, guys and girls, out for a night on the town having a good time. And look, they are even being responsible and taking a limo so nobody is drinking and driving...

The media needs to give it a rest, they are just looking for anything that could possibly be a story, this however is not a story. And what's funny is, at the time I posted this article, the morning after President Obama gave his State of the Union address, this article about the Blackhawks players is higher on the NBC5.com page than anything regarding Obama's speech, shit, an article about Leno is the featured article on the page. That should tell you right there that these media outlets have their priorities all screwed up. Of course there are certain outlets trying to spin it that these guys are role models and kids look up to them, etc., but still they aren't doing anything illegal, so I find that argument pointless and probably hypocritical unless the people reporting this crap were the ones in high school and college that never got invited to any parties... Maybe this is their way of making up for the hatred they had towards the more popular/outgoing people from their youth, get over it.

When I first heard the story on the radio this morning on the Sherman & Tingle show on Q101, they were totally defending the pictures and saying almost the same thing I am, there's nothing wrong with them, but the way they said other news outlets were reporting the story made me want to check out the pictures. And before I saw them I was already convinced that I wouldn't post them up here because I didn't want to add fuel to the flames, but after seeing the pictures in question I decided to post them for the sole sake of defending them. Seriously, look at the pictures and tell me that these are news worthy? There are only a couple things wrong I can find with these pictures, 1. these are the Chicago Blackhawks, why are they the ones that are stripped down? How come those girls aren't in their underwear? Which leads me to the next question, how come the Chicago Blackhawks can't get hotter chicks than this?

You can see the rest of the pictures after the jump...
