LOST: Season 6 – Dr. Linus (3/9/10)

And I'm back! Here's the very very short synopsis for tonight's episode of LOST which looks to be centered around Ben. I'll be back tomorrow to discuss easter eggs, theories and more...

Dr. Linus

Ben must deal with the consequences of a lie.

Alright, this will probably be a pretty short evaluation of last night's episode as I can't really think of too many interesting things to write about... Sure the episode was decent and we got some incite into some things, but I don't feel that a whole lot moved forward. The main thing I got out of the episode is that Jack is starting to realize that he is on the island for a reason and he now wants to figure out what that reason is, just as Jacob had hoped. Along with that, people that Jacob have touched somehow are not able to kill themselves and possibly develop special abilities. Richard was touched by Jacob and does not age, so maybe Miles was touched by Jacob which gave him the ability to speak to the dead (or listen rather) and maybe when Hurley was touched it gave him the ability to see dead people.... I don't know though. The idea of those that were touched [or something] by Jacob not being able to kill themselves could just be until they have fulfilled their purpose as well. Take Michael for example, in the past he tried to kill himself by shooting himself in his New York apartment, but the gun jams. Later on though, after the people that are supposed to get off the freighter, do, he ends up dying from the C4 explosion. Now I'm not sure if he's the one that caused it to go off or if he just happened to be down there when it did go off, but if he caused it then it would make sense that you could die after your purpose was fulfilled, but if he didn't cause it to explode, then it would still follow the idea that they can't kill themselves.

The other thing that was interesting in the episode was the fact that Ben and his Father were on the island and part of the Dharma Initiative in the alternate reality. We obviously know that something has happened to the island in the AR which causes it to be underwater, whether it sank (how an island sinks I don't know, considering islands are usually underwater mountains) or the water level rose, flooding it... but whether or not the H-bomb that the Losties blew up in 1977 caused all of that, I'm not so sure anymore. It seems that the AR may be completely different all the way back, I'm not sure how that works but hear me out. Ben was shot prior to the H-bomb going off and was brought to the Others to be healed, so he was separated from his father, so how could they have gotten off the island before the bomb went off [if that is what caused the island to be covered in water]? I guess if the bomb isn't the reason the island "sank" then Ben's father could have gotten him back somehow and gotten him off the island after the explosion, but it seems a little odd. So the whole fact that the island existed in the AR and that Ben and his father were on it, yet managed to get off at some point is a little confusing to me, but I'm sure things will be cleared up as we move through the season.

As far as easter eggs go not a whole lot of hard-to-spot things, just a lot of obvious deja-vu type moments. Alex is obviously still a part of Ben's life in the AR, Ben's father is alive and Ben has to supply him with oxygen which is a bit different than the mustard gas he used to kill him before. One of the books found in the tent on the beach on the island, not the Booty magazine, is called The Chosen which seems to have a plot based on religion, mathematics and a reunion between father and son... and of course the most obvious thing, not even an easter egg but I don't know where else to mention it, Widmore is coming back to the island in a fancy new submarine. Is he the guy that Jacob said was coming to the island? Is he good or bad? Is he bringing Desmond back with him? Who knows... so what did you guys think of the episode last night?

LOST: Season 6 – Sundown (3/2/10)

Below is the synopsis for this week's episode of LOST. As you know, I usually come back the next day with thoughts, easter eggs and theories, but we're headed to Mexico in the morning so I may not be able to post an update. I'll try to do it tonight, but that probably won't happen. So if you notice anything or have any theories regarding the episode make sure to come back and post in the comments.

Sundown

Sayid must make a difficult decision, while Claire has a warning for the temple inhabitants.

LOST: Season 6 Premiere – L.A.X. (2/2/10)

LOST is finally making it's return to television tonight for it's 6th and final season. If you need a refresher on what has happened so far "LOST: The Final Chapter" will run before the 2 hour season premiere tonight and should be a nice recap for those of you that may have forgotten what all went down last season.

In the past I've only written about certain episodes and theories I had, but since this is the last season and there are only 16 episodes, I think I'm going to try to write about each one after they air. Hopefully we can get some discussion going here and point out any easter eggs, hidden meanings, theories, etc. So check back tomorrow for a more in depth analysis of tonight's episode and check below for the synopsis (there were some spoilers in the synopsis, but I left them out for now)

The sixth and final season begins in the aftermath of the H-bomb detonation, as the survivors learn "when" they are.

There are nothing but spoilers after the jump so if you haven't watched the episode yet don't read ahead.

Flash Forward – Whatever Doesn’t Kill You…

...Makes you stronger.

We've all heard that saying at one point in our lives, but have you ever stopped to actually think that it could be true. What if every decision you've ever made in your life, everything from what color underwear to wear or weather or not to go skydiving, were still being played out in different dimensions simultaneously.  Now, what if every life or death situation you've made plays out and has you either living or dying. What if every time one of those decisions you made that caused you to live in your current consciousness actually caused half of your other dimensional selves to die. Now what if all of those different dimensional beings of yourself were connected in some "higher" way. If you consider that they are all connected by some other worldly means, then when any one of those consciousnesses dies in another dimension, it should in turn make those still existing, that much stronger. The energy within each one of those beings cannot just disappear as we know from science class energy cannot be created or destroyed, merely transferred. So with that in mind, it would only make sense that the energy from the dying consciousness would be transferred into the remaining living beings therefore making each one of us just a little bit stronger, thus making the saying "Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger" actually true.

Now with the above in mind I believe I've figured out what ABC's new TV show, Flash Forward, is touching upon. If you haven't seen the show it revolves around an incident that caused the entire world to black out for ~2 minutes and while everyone was blacked out they had a vision of a future date, April 29th, 2010. Some people saw normal things, but our story revolves around the FBI agents and their families who saw some not so normal things and in one agent's case, nothing at all. So the basic premise behind the show is trying to use those future visions to figure out why the blackouts happened and if they could happen again.

The show reminds me a little bit of ABC's other show, LOST, in that it's trying to base science fiction theories in a reality based world. In other words the things that happen are pretty far fetched, but the way the show grounds things in a realistic world makes it seem as if these things could actually happen. So back to my theory regarding what is happening in the world of FlashForward. In the most recent episode, which is also the last episode before the winter hiatus, the people who believe they are responsible for the blackout come forward and explain that they were doing a science experiment that may be related to the cause, but they aren't 100% sure. It's this scientist, Lloyd Simcoe,  that has confided in the main character's wife, Olivia Benford, causing a lot of stress to everyone involved because in her Flash Forward she saw herself with this scientist guy and not her current husband, Mark. Based on this little notion and a theory that Lloyd told to Olivia about different universes and dimensions existing in the same plane (as I touched on in the first paragraph), I think I've figured out what is going on in the show.

While Lloyd is getting ready to transfer his son to another hospital he is talking to Olivia and the topic of Harvard comes up. Apparently Lloyd did his studies there in 1998, when he mentioned the corner that he lived on when going to school Olivia immediately knew where it was. It seems as though in 1998 Olivia was supposed to finish her schooling at Harvard and move into an apartment on the same corner, but when Mark got transferred she followed him instead. Now the weird thing is that, that apartment that Olivia was supposed to move into was the apartment where Lloyds wife moved into and it's how they first met. So Olivia mentions that had she gone to Harvard, the two probably would have met long before the incident that killed Lloyds wife and put his son in the hospital (the blackout). So with that in mind, Olivia's flash forward showed her looking over the railing over her home at Lloyd sitting on the couch below, leaning towards the fact that she leaves Mark and some how ends up with Lloyd in 6 months.

On the other side of the story Mark is a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for years and wouldn't dream of touching the stuff again as it almost destroyed his marriage, however in his flash forward he was in his office working on Mosaic (the investigation into the blackout) and he's drunk. His partner, Demetri, doesn't have a flash forward thus indicating that he is going to be dead before April 29th. Demetri's fiance see's his funeral and so forth. Everyone has a flash forward to April 29, 2010 that they think is their future, but what if it's not.

Another agent working at the FBI saw his future, he saw himself in London working on another case. He also saw himself getting a phone call saying that someone had died, but he wasn't sure who at the time. After figuring out who was going to die because of his future actions he decided he couldn't let things play out that way and wanted to show the world that you can change the future, so he committed suicide way before April 29th, 2010.

All of these things lead me to believe that what the people saw in their flash forwards weren't necessarily their future, but another dimension playing out in their head. Almost as if the energy created which caused the blackout was so strong that it caused 2 different dimensions to cross over for a brief period allowing for the current characters to get a glimpse into another dimension where their lives are playing out differently based on the decisions they've made. This would explain why the one agent was able to commit suicide and "change" his future, what he actually saw wasn't "his" future, but another future in a different dimension. And going back to Mark, Olivia and Lloyd, maybe what Olivia and Lloyd saw was their alternate dimension, a dimension where she did go to Harvard and ended up meeting Lloyd and getting married.

Now I know it's not a fool proof conclusion, there are some oddities that can't be explained by my theory above. For example, Lloyd has a son and Olivia and Mark have a daughter, in the kids' flash forwards they see each other, but it seems as if they don't know each other that well as Mark and Olivia's daughter tells Lloyd's son something along the lines of "it's your house too" when he goes to look for a cookie, meaning he can take whatever he wants in the house as he lives there too.  So the alternate dimension thing doesn't really hold up that well if those 2 kids aren't brother and sister and haven't been living together for a while.... but I still think that general idea has something to do with the overall background of the story.

Does anyone else watch this show and have any theories about what's going on with the blackouts and the flash forwards?

FlashForward

ABC aired a new show last week called Flash Forward in the vein of their other wildly popular show, LOST. Now even though producers, cast and crew have come forth to say that this show isn't like LOST and there is nothing sci-fi about it, I'm going to go ahead and say they are just blowing smoke up our asses and just don't want to alienate people from watching the show.

The premise behind Flash Forward is that for some unknown reason on this particular day, everyone in the world lost consciousness for exactly 2 minutes and 17 seconds. However, when they were "unconscious" their mind actually "flashed forward" and saw their future 6 months from then. So of course we have the FBI agents that we are following who are now trying to put the pieces of these "flash forwards" together in order to solve the mystery.

So I watched the Pilot from last week, last night, and I found it pretty good. I'm definitely going to give the show a chance and see where it goes although I hate that it's on Thursday nights. I seriously don't think you could fit anymore TV on to Thursday night, it's ridiculous, my DVR doesn't know what to do with itself, but thank god for the internet and it's ability to stream shows.

Back to the show. It started off pretty good in the premiere. We saw what everyone was doing a little bit before the "black out" happened and then we got to see the events immediately following, as well as some quick shots of the main character and his wife's "flash forwards". And I think the LOST/Fringe crowd is going to eat this up as it progresses. There are already hints of easter eggs and stuff hidden in the show, for instance, there was clearly a large Oceanic Airlines billboard in the back of one of the shots in the first episode. And for those who don't know what I'm referring to, Oceanic Airlines is the airline that caused the people of LOST to end up on the island. But for every good easter egg there were some bad ones.

I get that things in the show are subtle yet important and you hope that the viewer picks up on these things, but the fact that ABC went out of it's way to point out things in the first episode was very annoying and almost insulting. Obviously when the main character stops in the middle of the road and a kangaroo hops by there's clearly something special about the kangaroo. There is no need for ABC to come back after the fade to black and say "Did you see the kangaroo? That could be important, check out our website for more information". That was just lame, obviously we saw the kangaroo and the way the scene was shot the audience is clearly aware that the kangaroo will have something to do with something that happens later. Same thing with the 3 stars tattoo seen in the main characters "flash forward". We get it, it's important, we're not stupid so don't insult us.

Overall I think the show will do pretty well as long as it doesn't start getting too ridiculous ala Prison Break and tones down the point out of easter eggs. You're missing the point of easter eggs if you're going to point them out to us each episode so hopefully this was just a pilot episode thing and we won't see it again. I also like John Cho in his role, I've always liked him in his movies and look forward to seeing him on TV. I also like the random cameo of Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy creator) as an FBI agent. Not sure if that's a full time gig or if he'll just be in the pilot, but he didn't do bad with the few lines he had.

So what did you guys think of this show? Are you going to continue to watch it?
