America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5 – The Finals

That's all she wrote folks, your season 5 champion was crowned last night. I actually found the live show last night kind of boring to be honest. I feel like in the past the region performances were much better, I don't know why. The whole episode just seemed very drawn out to fill the hour time slot. The group performances were decent, but with that many people running around on stage at the same time there were bound to be some mistakes, but it's not like it mattered since the competition was already over before last nights episode anyways.

So that's basically it, the show consisted of all the groups coming back and performing based on their region, then Poreotix and Blueprint Cru came out together and performed some step routine, which I found pretty boring, honestly. After the performances (or maybe it was before that last one) they showed Poreotix and Blueprint Cru's journey to the finals just like they do for each group when they are eliminated. And then they announce the winner...

Poreotix

I was a little disappointed as I felt they just weren't good. I liked them at the beginning of the season because their popping and robotic movement was kind of cool, but after seeing it week after week it just made me feel like that's all they can do. There were a few weeks when they actually tried to dance and do choreography, but it just didn't work for me. I think Blueprint Cru is a much better crew overall. They are well rounded and diverse in their moves and it wasn't all just "tik tik tik tik tik tik tik tik" as JC said. But the people have spoken and the majority of people like Poreotix.

So what did you think of the final show last night and Poreotix winning? I'm sure I'll get a lot of shit from the Poreotix sac riders out there, but I truly believe they should not have won... I don't even think they should have been in the finals.

America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5: Week 7

This week was the last episode before the live season finale last week and all three crews brought their "A" game. I don't feel like beating around the bush and doing a lame little intro this morning so let's just get right to the crews and the performances.

The night started off with Blueprint Cru being automatically promoted to the finals. Apparently their performance last week was a crowd pleaser and the fans voted in their favor... thank god. I'm glad to see that [overrated] Poreotix had to fight for their lives in order to make it to the finals instead of just riding a stream of semi-decent performances.

Since they were saved, Blueprint Cru came out and were the first to perform. The challenge this week was to incorporate "hot" dance moves from all over the country into one, extra long, performance. Personally I've never heard of any of these moves, but that's not surprising considering ABDC is pretty much the closest I get to dancing. I thought the performance was absolutely incredible. The energy level was there, the choreography was there and they didn't seem to miss a beat. Personally I think these guys should win. They've shown more versatility and diversity than any other group on the show, and they are just plain good.

Poreotix came out next and did a pretty good job. I liked these guys at the beginning of the season, but as the weeks went on it just seemed like a lot of the same stuff and I became bored (maybe my girlfriend's deep hatred towards them started to rub off). I was actually pretty impressed with their performance for this challenge though. I could have done without the unnecessary signs telling us when they were about to do a move from the challenge, you shouldn't have to use signs to tell us that. There was also a couple small missteps by a couple members of the crew, but nothing major. Overall out of any performance these guys did this was probably one of my favorites, but I still don't agree with all the hype surrounding them.

Hype 5-0 was up last and I was blown away. I've always thought this group had potential, but they never seemed to really impress me week after week. They came out of the gate swinging this week though and I honestly think their performance was better than Poreotix. The energy level was incredible, they used the entire stage and were pretty much non-stop dancing for the entire time. But apparently it was too late. Had they performed like this all season I think they judges would have looked at them a little differently and moved them to the finals next week.

So in the end Blueprint Cru will face off against Poreotix and I seriously hope that Blueprint Cru wins this thing. While I don't agree with my girlfriend that Poreotix is "fucking terrible" as she puts it, [so classy, haha] I did get bored with them as the season went on. I almost feel as though the judges gave them the spot in the finals because of their popularity and the fact that a Hype 5-0/Blueprint Cru finals would probably have been pretty one-sided.

After Poreotix was moved through by the judges, both them and Blueprint Cru had to create 1 more dance for the fans to vote on to determine the winner. Swizz Beats was brought on to create a beat for each crew to dance to and I really feel that Blueprint Cru had the better performance. I get the fact that Poreotix think they are robots and a video game type beat fit their style, but I wasn't impressed. I thought the only part that was kind of cool was the hand motions they did towards the end, but that kind of thing just makes me lean more towards the fact that they don't have much versatility in their routines without the guidance of a challenge. Don't get me wrong, they are good at what they do, but I just wanted more. I thought Blueprint Cru showed more diversity in their moves in this final performance and I will be rooting for them come next week. I did feel kind of cheated by both final routines, only because coming from the much longer previous performances of the night, these final ones felt that much shorter.

I also don't understand why they had Swizz Beats perform at the end since pretty much all he's done lately is lend his voice to background tracks or hooks so it was a little odd to see him up there rapping hooks to all different songs... I also thought it was weird that when they were telling a little bit about him they never once mentioned the fact that he produced majority of DMX's tracks and helped put Ruff Ryders on the map (in their prime). My girlfriend came to the conclusion that the majority of the younger crowd that watches the show probably has never heard of DMX since all he seems to be doing lately is getting arrested.

But now I'm dragging this out longer than I wanted to, so who do you guys want to win next week? Leave a comment (no registration required), I'd put up a poll, but the plugin I was using before decided to crap out on me and start acting weird so I killed it completely.

America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5: Week 6

This week the competition revealed who would be competing in the top 3 and I have to say it was a little bit of a surprise to me. This week's challenge was the Magic Challenge, which was a favorite of mine when Beat Freaks absolutely killed it with their magic ball routine a couple seasons ago, so needless to say I was looking forward to this week's show.

Hype 5-0 was up first and their challenge was to utilize a magical floating stick that defies gravity, in their routine. The routine overall wasn't bad, the illusion was kind of cool, but I think they got the short end of the stick (ohhhhh, yep I went there). I mean it really was just a stick [on somestrings] that stood around the stage, they didn't really do a whole lot with them. I do think their choreography and the dance part of the performance was pretty good, but I think I just think they got stuck with a lame prop.

Poreotix was up next and their challenge was to make an object move with their minds. They used a box with circles cut in all sides of it and spun it around in the air, making it float and then in the end used it as sort of a bowling/wrecking ball to knock down the rest of the crew. I think this prop fit well with their style of dance and they were able to incorporate everything pretty seamlessly throughout the whole performance. With this one I neve really felt like they were working too hard to utilize the prop like I did with Hype 5-0, but something about the whole routine made it feel really short to me... but it could have just been me.

Blueprint Cru was up next and their challenge was to give the illusion of someone floating. This was the most theatrical I think we've ever seen this group and it was a nice change of pace. It shows that they have versatility and can do other things besides just go out and do a choreographed dance number. I will have to agree with the judges that it started off really slow and took way too long to get into the actual routine, but once it got going I enjoyed it. The illusion itself is another one of those that isn't the easiest to incorporate into a dance number. In order for the trick to work, one person has to stand perpendicular to the "floating" person because [I believe] there is a stick or platform of some sort that extends from the person's knee area, under the "floating" person, which is what allows them to appear as if they are floating. So essentially one person had to stand around and not move much while the person was floating, not to mention that the person floating couldn't move around much for fear of breaking the illusion. So I will say it wasn't my favorite performance of the night, but it was different.

Jungle Boogie was the last crew to go and their illusion was to make it appear as though someone is coming through something "solid". I thought their performance was actually very good and very creative. I especially liked the end where they used the black circle thing (which is used to hide the actual trick to the illusion on the mirrored wall) to create another illusion of a fist coming through the back of one of the members and out the front. I thought their energy level was much higher than anyone elses and their dancing was better, but unfortunately they were not saved by the judges and were sent home.

Now as much as I love Blueprint Cru, and have all season, based on this weeks performances, I think they were the weaker of the two. But having said that, I know why the judges chose to save them over Jungle Boogie and it's because they show more diversity in their dancing. Jungle Boogie has been pretty consistent over the course of the season, but there's never been any risks or evolution in their routines, they just all seem the same. They are great dancers, but I think the judges recognize the diversity in Blueprint Cru which is what they saw when deciding who would would stay.

So we're down to the top 3, Hype 5-0, Poreotix and Blueprint Cru and honestly, since the viewers are voting for the winner, I'm going to call it now and say Poreotix is going to take it this year. They seem to have been favorites from the very beginning and compared to the popularity of the other 2 crews, who have both been in the bottom 2 at some point, I think it's safe to say that they will take the title this year, but what do you guys think? Of the remaining 3, who will win?

America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5: Week 5

This week's recap is going to be a quick one for a couple reasons, 1. I don't have a lot of time this morning to write and I wanted to get something up and 2. I don't really have anything bad to say about any of the crews last night, so let's get to it. This week's challenge was the Usher Challenge. Each group was given a task by Usher himself to incorporate into their performances. Most of the time it was a dance move, but in one case it was a prop (heelies). I thought overall every group did extremely well and they were all pretty entertaining. If I had to choose one group that I didn't care for last night it would have been Saltare, but I haven't liked them from the beginning so if I had to choose another group I would have to Hype 5-0 didn't really impress me as much as the other crews. Their performance was not bad by any means and they actually seem to "dance" more than any of the other groups, but I don't know, there was just something about it that I wasn't feeling. I think it was just the fact that it wasn't as power and and didn't grab me like the other performances did. Other than that I though all of the other groups did extremely well and I continue to be impressed by Jungle Boogie and how much energy they have, not to mention how clean their moves are. Poreotix, as much as I liked them and favored them as a contender for the top spot, the whole thing is getting a little old. They tried to be cute and funny with their performance last night and, while good, was a little stale for me. Blueprint Cru is still my favorite to win, but I honestly think the fans of the show are going to swing the votes towards Poreotix in the end.

So overall I liked this weeks performances, but was definitely glad to see Saltare finally get the boot. I think it was Lil Mama that said it last night, it was a little stiff, and that's what happens when they try to actually dance instead of just putting on a jump rope clinic. It was there time and actually I'm very surprised that they even made it this far. So that's that, we're down to the top 4 contenders and honestly it's a pretty even battle although I'm going to go ahead and make my predictions now for the rest of the season.

4th Place: Hype 5-0
3rd Place: Blueprint Cru
2nd Place: Jungle Boogie
1st Place: Poreotix

As much as I would love to see Blueprint Cru win the whole thing I think that the fans are going to vote Poreotix to the top. What are your predictions for the remaining 4 groups?

America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5: Week 4

And we're back! Sorry for missing out on last week's Lady Gaga challenge, but we were relaxing by the pool in Mexico and I wasn't about to spend my vacation watching 'Dance Crew' and writing about it, sorry. But lets jump right into this week's disco performances a little differently than the past... I didn't have time to post last night like I normally do so the order of the performances may be off a little bit and they may be a little shorter than usual, but you'll get the gist of it.

Blueprint Cru got immunity last week so they were up first and I thought they did pretty well. They had to incorporate the "funky guitar" into their performance and did about as much with it as one could expect considering it's kind of a lame move. Overall a solid, well rounded performance, which is good because I was worried these guys were starting to slip a bit after the first couple weeks. (They were my favorite coming out of the regionals).

Saltare had to incorporate the hustle into their performance and maybe it was just me, but I completely missed it. I like that they tried to incorporate some actual dancing into the routine, but again, I can't get over the fact that every performance turns into a jump rope demo... why are these guys still around? Sure the jump rope tricks were hard and it was kind of cool (and also kind of hokey) that the ropes were on fire for the end, but this is still a dance show and I don't feel that they are actually dancers...

Poreotix is up next and I believe they had to incorporate the robot (?) into their performance. I only question that because it's pretty much what they do every week and I can't remember their move exactly. I though the performance was ok, I've liked other ones in the past much better, they just seemed a little out of a sync this time which is odd for them, I did like the sexy robot as J.C. called it, and the wave thing they did across the stage was cool. My girlfriend still thinks they are terrible and doesn't like the style of dance, but to each her own I guess...

Hype 5-0 had probably the worst move to incorporate into their performance, the electric slide... ugh. Again, like Saltare, I didn't really catch the electric slide part of the routine, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there, I could have just been distracted by some other move. I think it was a well rounded performance, a little slow at times, but I think these guys have potential and hopefully will blow us away in the coming weeks.

Heavy Impact had to incorporate the strut into their performance which I wasn't worried about, it was the lift that I was worried about. I'll be honest, without the performance in front of me I can't remember much about it. Since we watched both the Lady Gaga and the Disco shows last night, I seem to be confusing them in my head. So with that being said, I guess the performance wasn't that memorable to me, but then again I haven't really been a huge fan of these guys all season.

Static Noyze was up next and they have been one of my favorite groups so far this season. I can't remember what move they had to incorporate, but I do remember that one of their members could not compete due to a back injury, which probably threw off the whole vibe of the group. I thought they did pretty well, there were a few sloppy moments and a few hiccups, but overall a decent performance.

Jungle Boogie was the last group of the night and they had to incorporate the bump (?) into the routine. I thought overall these guys and Blueprint Cru had the best performances of the night. This performance had tons of energy, they all seemed to be pretty in sync and smooth. The lift was cool since the girl lifted one of the guys which is the opposite of what we normally see, so that was clever (she's also pretty tiny too). So between the 3 groups in the bottom, Heavy Impact, Static Noyze and Jungle Boogie, I had no doubt that Jungle Boogie was going to be the ones saved this week... based on this week alone though.

So there you have it, Heavy Impact and Static Noyze are headed home, which is sure to upset a lot of people. I personally would have rather seen Static Noyze hang around for a bit longer, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way.
