Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition Revealed

That's right folks, if you were wondering what ridiculous piece of [cheap] swag you'd be getting when you ponied up $150 for the Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition, you don't have to wait any longer. Just like Modern Warfare 2 did last year with the night vision goggles, this years Black Ops Prestige Edition will net you an RC Car similar to the one seen in the multiplayer teaser video. Yep, it's that same RC car that was seen driving through the map towards the enemy team, only to explode once reaching it's destination. It also seems that the hardened edition of the game (which is included with the prestige edition) will come with 4 bonus co-op maps... which I'm not too happy about. I'm not the type of person that needs to pay $10 $20 extra dollars (seriously?!??) for a fancy case/booklet or $90 extra for a ridiculous RC Car that I'll never use (even though it has video/audio surveillance which is kinda cool), so the fact that I may have to pony up the $20 for the hardened edition right off the bat is a little annoying to me, especially when I know they'll be releasing at least 2 DLC packs (nothing confirmed, I'm just assuming based on previous installments) that will cost me $15 each... I can deal with the DLC being $15 extra, but I don't like all these special editions that are being released....

Anyways, below you can find exactly what comes in the Prestige Edition and you can head on over to Amazon and pre-order yours today or you can go here: Get the new Call of Duty(R).

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition includes:

  • RC-XD Video Surveillance Vehicle

    • Video camera to send wireless video to Transmitter
    • Microphone to send wireless audio to Transmitter
    • Digital proportional steering and throttle
    • Independent suspension
    • Display stand
  • RC-XD Transmitter
    • 2" backlit TFT 220 x176 color screen to receive video from car
    • Integrated speaker to receive audio from car
    • Custom pistol grip style RC controller

The End of Call of Duty As We Know It

I'm sure you're all aware of the lawsuits between Infinity Ward and Activision these days regarding unpaid royalties for Modern Warfare 2, but did you know that it could lead to the demise of Infinity Ward as we know it? According to some analyst named Mike Hickley, he believes that once the next map pack for Modern Warfare 2 is completed by Infinity Ward, Activision will absorb the studio into them and spread the work on Modern Warfare 3 between other studios that haven't had anything to do with the Call of Duty franchise. Of course we'll still see the usual sub-par entries into the series from Treyarch (sorry guys, decent games but they don't live up to the quality of the IW ones), as well as Sledgehammer's "innovative take" on the Call of Duty series (possible MMO?).

So basically the Call of Duty series is never going to be the same. Now I won't say that it's going to suck balls, but it will definitely be different. Treyarch will still push out their release this fall so Activision can pad their pockets a little more, but I wouldn't expect Infinity Ward to put in significant work on Modern Warfare 3. And I'm sure there are some of you out there that would be happy to see another studio take the reigns, based on the amount of ridiculous complaints you guys have with the game.

What I'm hoping will happen with all of this is that Infinity Ward will be closed by Activision and hopefully most of the team will move over to "Respawn" which was created by the 2 former heads of Infinity Ward, and Respawn will release a first person shooter that makes you wonder how you ever played the call of duty games, which in turn will absolutely crush Activision's profits from Call of Duty, which is one of their biggest money makers. I think the future of gaming is going to be downloadable games, you see it right now with Microsoft putting older games up for download on their Xbox Live Marketplace, and with that will come a way for smaller studios to release their own games without the help of a publisher. Of course it won't be easy and there's still going to have to be investors involved for marketing, etc, but publishing companies like Activision will not hold the reigns of these developers anymore.... or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part, but look at Apple's App Store and the boom it's given to smaller developers. Anyone can code a decent game and make big money, can you imagine if a gaming company like Respawn released a ridiculous FPS on their own? They would probably stand to make a huge amount of money. Look at Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, he dropped the record label and now gives away his music for free, only charging for special editions and he still makes quite a bit of money.

Now I understand that this method is ok for already established artists who have a following to support them, but I really think things are changing and the entertainment industry tycoons are going to lose their grip on artists whether it be music or video games, or anything really. But I guess the point of this post is that I kind of hope that the news of Activision closing Infinity Ward is true, if only to send shockwaves through the gaming community and make people hate Activision even more. It does suck for all those directly involved, so I hope that Respawn tries to snatch up their old team if they can, but ultimately I think it will be for the best. The only concern is that most people don't read all this crap on the internet or even know what studio is releasing a video game. I bet you can ask 100 people if they knew that half the Call of Duty games were developed by a totally different group of people and they would have no clue what you're talking about. But I guess for now we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out. Hopefully all this controversy also causes Activision to price the 2nd Map Pack around the $10 mark instead of $15...

Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Pack Breaks Records

Looks like all those complaints and boycotts did a lot of good in sending a message to Activision regarding the pricing of the Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Pack.... Not really. The $15 map pack that everyone was bitching about went on to sell 1 million copies in it's first 24 hours and 2.5 million in it's first week. This could work one of two ways, either Activision decides that since so many copies of the first map pack were sold they will lower the price of a subsequent map pack as a thank you, or the more likely situation, they see that people are willing to pay $15 for 5 maps and keep that has the standard pricing from now on (which is what people boycotting this are afraid of).

Like I said before, I don't think $15 is too high for 5 maps, would I have liked to pay $10 instead, of course, but I paid $10 for 3 maps in Call of Duty: World at War... twice, so I don't feel very cheated here considering the number hours I have already put into the new maps.

Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Impressions

I found some time over the weekend to sit down and dive into the campaign for Modern Warfare 2, and once I got in I couldn't get out. After about 7.5 hours of playing I finally reached the end and defeated the threat against the United States. I won't go into too much detail about the storyline because there are some cool twists and turns that I don't want to spoil, so I'll mostly talk about the flow of the story, the different levels and things of that nature.

When I got the first Modern Warfare game 2 years ago, I dove into the campaign mode on the "Hardened" difficulty level. I didn't want to be held down by the looming "Veteran" level so I opted to play it a little safer. I knew I could beat the game on Normal pretty quickly so I wanted to make it last. After beating it on Hardened I did go back and beat everything on Veteran which gave me some nice replay value, but with Modern Warfare 2 I wasn't really looking for replay value in the campaign, I just wanted to dive into multiplayer, which honestly made me feel a little guilty. The developers put all this time and energy into making a great single player campaign in addition to the multiplayer that everyone loves, so I felt that I needed to give the campaign a shot. This time around I dove headfirst in the campaign on the highest difficultly level, Veteran.

Modern Warefare 2 Available Now

Today is the day folks, Modern Warfare 2 has finally hit the shelves and is set to break all sorts of records based on early numbers. GTA IV previously held the record for the most pre-orders on Amazon.com but as of yesterday Modern Warfare 2 had 50% more pre-orders than Grand Theft Auto IV did, so if the numbers continue in that direction this could be a record breaking title for the guys at Infinity Ward.

Let us know if you got your copy already, did you wait in line at midnight? If you did and you took pictures of the midnight launch event you were at, post up the pictures we'd love to see em.

Those of you that have gotten the game already, does it live up to the hype? Is Xbox Live already littered with 12 year olds calling everyone "fags" and "n----rs"? Let us know what you think, I'll be posting a full review after I get through the single player campaign, which may or may not take a while depending on how obsessed I become with the multiplayer.

Update 11/12/09: The initial numbers are in and it looks like Modern Warfare 2 took in about $310 million in it's first 24 hours, in only North America and the United Kingdom, making it the biggest selling launch in entertainment history. Grand Theft Auto 4 previously held the record with a similar $310 million sold in 24 hours, but those were worldwide figures where as Modern Warfare is only 2 countries. I will update this post again with final numbers when they are released. [source: huffington post]

Update 11/18/09: Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 2 has taken in $550 million in it's first 5 days making it the biggest entertainment launch in history. It beat out GTA IV's 5 day sales of $500 million and some Harry Potter movie's $394 million 5 day launch.  So if you're going by overall sales totals yeah Modern Warfare 2 trumps Harry Potter, but if you base it on the number of people that bought a copy of the game vs. a ticket to Harry Potter, I'm pretty sure more people saw Harry Potter considering a movie is ~$10 where as a video game is $60.
