Step Up 3D Review

Friday night me and the girlfriend laid low and took in a flick. This time we decided to go check out Step Up 3D. I know what you're thinking, how is a manly man like myself going to be caught dead at a movie like Step Up 3D, but then you realize that I went with my girlfriend and you're like, alright then... Honestly, I still wanted to see it. I've seen the first two and they aren't the worst movies in the world and I actually find the dancing stuff pretty cool, which is odd because I can't dance for shit. But enough about why I went to see the movie, let's talk about the actual movie and the 3D aspect of it.

The movie follows Moose (Adam Sevani) who you probably recognized from Step Up 2: The Streets (as well as an episode of Fantasy Factory). He's a very talented dancer, not the greatest actor in the world, but let's be honest most people aren't coming to these movies for the acting. So the movie follows him as he goes off to college at NYU with his best friend Camile, played by Alyson Stoner who you may recognize from the original Step Up where she played Channing Tatum's little sister or maybe from the Missy Elliot videos with the little kid break dancers. She's always been around when you see little kids dancing in videos, but now she's all grown up. So both of them are at NYU and Moose is there to study engineering, not dance, but of course he's instantly brought back into the dance scene by The Pirates, lead by Luke (who looks like Ashton Kutcher's doppelganger).  Luke brings him into this dance world that he's created and they all start dancing together until the bank comes to take away their practice space, so of course they have to enter the big dance competition in order to make the money they need to pay back the bank. And that's the gist of it. There's a few different side story aspects of it and more people get involved, but for the sake of argument, that's the plot. So with that out of the way, let's talk about the actual movie itself and the 3D.

First of all I couldn't believe that this movie is directed by the same guy that directed Step Up 2... I thought 2 was decent, but this one just seemed like it was shot weird. I understand that it was shot in 3D so they needed to make a few changes here and there in order to promote the 3D aspect of it, but some of the camera angles and movement just seemed amateur to me. There were also quite a few times when the actors are looking directly at the camera and talking/dancing, when I don't feel like they should have been. There were some aspects of the movie where Luke is filming a dance video and there are people talking to the camera, but you know when those parts are because there's a border around the screen to make it look like a video camera, but these scenes I'm referring to didn't have that and it just seemed out of place. I did get why they did it at a few other parts during the dance battles because it added to the 3D aspect, but I still felt it was weird.

Since I brought it up, let's talk about the 3D. I've written about 3D movie in the past and I still stand by what I've said... I don't like it. For one, I have a small head so the glasses never fit me properly so every time I would sit back in my chair, the arms of the glasses would hit the headrest and they'd basically fall off my nose. Also, I don't like watching a movie through sunglasses. It dulls out the colors of the movie and just annoys me when I know the scene is supposed to be vibrant, yet the glasses make it look terrible. And the main thing I hate about 3D movies is the ghosting. I just don't think the technology is quite there yet. The screen isn't 100% clear when watching it through the glasses, especially in a movie like this that has a ton of movement, everything just starts to blur. There were a few cool scenes where 1 dancer at a time would be featured in the frame doing some isolations or whatnot, and that looked really cool, but when the whole group is dancing and there's so much going on it was more annoying than anything. There were also some points where you could tell they were doing things just because it was in 3D and I don't really care for that either. The one thing about 3D that I do like is that it adds a ton of depth to the scenes that don't have a lot of motion. There's one scene in particular where Luke is sitting on a rooftop that looks out at the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York skyline and it looked incredible because of the 3D, I actually felt like I was sitting with him on the rooftop. But other than that one scene, nothing else really impressed me.

Now that's not to say that it was a bad effort. I think it was done much better than something like Clash of the Titans or The Last Airbender (especially since Step Up was shot in 3D and not a conversion), but I still don't think the technology is where it needs to be for the mass market.

To wrap things up, the movie itself was entertaining. The acting was a little 'meh', but the dancing and the music were really cool and let's be honest that's what people are going to see. Nobody gives a shit if the main character hasn't been in any other movies, he's not trying to win an oscar here. So if you're looking for cool dance moves and some good music, and an interesting take on 3D, then I would suggest checking it out. But don't worry, if you don't get to see it in 3D in the theater I think it will hold up just fine in 2D once it hits blu-ray.

The Last Airbender Review

I had never watched the show on Nickelodeon until my girlfriend started watching it and even then we only made it through a few episodes and I could already tell it was a little much for me. And when I say "much" I mean that it was a little too childish, but it wasn't terrible. I saw through a handful of episodes and actually once Aang stopped acting like an annoying little kid and started kicking people's asses, it wasn't terrible... but we're not here to talk about the TV show so let's get to the movie.

M. Night Shyamalan has written and directed such classics as "The Sixth Sense". . . and that's about it. I'll admit I did like "Unbreakable" when a lot of people didn't and I thought "Signs" was decent. "The Village" was a little boring and the twist was predictable and "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening" were just terrible, but even with the last 2 not being that great, the trailers for "The Last Airbender" seemed decent in the special effects department so I was kind of looking forward to it.

Before I even went into the theater I kind of knew what to expect. I had read a few of the test screening reviews and all of them said that the acting was horrendous. I had also heard that the kid playing Aang wasn't even Asian and that he had never acted before and was only cast because of his martial arts skills. So going into the movie I was expecting terrible acting and decent special effects and all in all that's what I got.

Noah Ringer, who plays Aang, is definitely not 100% Asian, but he did have some Asian type qualities to him and I didn't find it too distracting. What I did find distracting was his acting, and actually all of the acting. Even the acting of Dev Patel, who I thought did a fine job in "Slumdog Millionaire" seemed bad. Even Cliff Curtis, who is a pretty solid actor, seemed way out of his element here, not to mention the main cast of younger actors. So it seems as though the test screening reviews that I read were pretty spot on with the acting, but I'm not sure if it was the acting so much as the writing...

M. Night wrote the script, as he normally does, but the dialogue and exchanges between characters just seemed very unnatural throughout the film. There were some parts where the dialogue was even laughable when it was supposed to be a serious moment. I don't know if Night is just slipping as he's becoming more comfortable in Hollywood, but I don't recall the dialogue in "The Happening" to be good either. I mean Mark Wahlberg talks to plants for god sake. So yes, the acting is pretty terrible and it is quite a distraction from the rest of the movie.

As for the plot itself, it seemed as though there was way too much jammed into an hour and 40 or so minutes. The movie covers the first season of the TV show and a good amount happens, so to cut that down to the length of a feature film doesn't do the show justice. The story also seemed to jump around a lot and made use of a narrator to catch us up on things that had happened in the time that had passed, which I didn't like.  I understand that it's not easy to stay true to the source material and appease the fans while trying to condense a seasons worth of material into 2 hours of film, but there had to have been a better way. The movie definitely left itself open to a sequel, but I'm just not sure that we'll ever see the conclusion of the story. The movie is going up against "Eclipse" this weekend, do you really think it stands any sort of chance? If I were the studio, I would have at least pushed the movie back a week or up a week. There's no way I would want to open a movie geared towards a younger audience when I know that "Eclipse" is coming out that same weekend.

So that's what I didn't like about the movie, but that's not to say that I hated the movie. The special effects and visuals were actually pretty good. We didn't see it in 3D because, like most movies these days, it's a 3D conversion meaning that the movie was not shot in 3D or developed to be in 3D. After "Avatar" came out, studios started converting all their movies to 3D because they think that's what the audience wants. Well guess what Hollywood, IT'S NOT WHAT WE WANT! If a movie is conceived and shot using 3D technology then fine, I'll bite, but when a movie is shot conventionally and then converted to 3D you end up giving us a giant pile of shit that we have to watch through glasses. This is why 3D is going to fail. If the camera technology isn't out there being used then why even bother. So with that in mind, we saw it in 2D and visually it was great. There were a few scenes where the camera movement was too fast or something and there was a ridiculous amount of ghosting that was very distracting. The element effects were absolutely stunning, especially the water effects, so it made the movie watchable.

I would say that if you had a choice between "Eclipse" and "The Last Airbender" this weekend, I would just go outside and hang out with friends. It's 4th of July weekend [in the US] there's no reason to spend it sitting inside a movie theater with the choices available. If you're a fan of the TV show you'll probably enjoy most of the movie, but don't expect to be blown away. Personally I'd wait until Blu-Ray to check it out. So overall not the worst movie I've seen, but between the bad acting, bad writing and convoluted storyline I would say skip this one for now. If you want to go for just the special effects, by all means do, but it's not as epic as the trailers would make you believe, but it's still pretty cool and fun to watch.

Some Things Just Lose Their Appeal

Whenever there is a new fad or technology or whatever, I usually jump on board and give it a shot to see how I feel about it. I'm not really one of those people that likes to base my experience on other people's opinions. So with that being said, I thought I'd put together a short list of things that I was really into in the past couple years that are either, just now gaining popularity or have been pretty popular within the last 2-3 years, that I'm now official sick of.

After writing a few of these I realize that I come off as a complete jackass if you're still into any of these things.. so just note that these are my opinions and you shouldn't let them deter you from any of these things if you enjoy them... (now I sound like a vag).  I'll update the post as things lose their appeal or as I realize there are more things that I'm sick of...

1. Twitter - I'll admit, I was one of those people that jumped on Twitter before any of my friends did. I had no friends on the service, but for some reason I thought that other people wanted to read that I was taking a shit or hanging out with friends that no one else on Twitter would know... Eventually more and more of my friends and celebrities joined the service and it became a little more interesting for me, but as of late I've become very bored with it. I used to post about everything I did, but I've begun to realize that nobody gives a shit... And you know how I realized this? Because every time I fire up TweetDeck and read what the people I'm following are doing... I DON'T GIVE A SHIT. Now I'm not talking about the celebrities, although most of the time I don't give a shit what they are doing either, but at least they lead a more interesting life than most of my friends (Kevin Smith's tweets are always entertaining), I'm talking about people I know in real life. Now not all my friends are retarded when it comes to Twitter, but some of the ones that post every day that think they "get" the service... really aren't using it how I feel it should be used. And that makes what they post absolutely pointless to me, and I'm friends with these people, seriously if you want to have a full conversation with someone there are much better ways to do it than Twitter. I have no idea how anyone could follow a random person and find their shit interesting. It would be like me watching two donkey's trying to have sex in a zoo, the donkey's are limited to what they can do because everyone is watching them and they are confined to a certain amount of space, and after a while nobody gives a shit that the donkey's are having sex because it's boring as hell. Maybe then one of the donkey's does something interesting like takes a huge shit as he's mounting the other donkey, but that's only interesting once. If the donkey continues to shit while having sex it just becomes dumb and uninteresting. And then maybe the male donkey decides it wants to appear "special" to the people watching it so it decides to try and fuck the zebra in the next pen... but that's the problem, the zebra is in the next pen separated by a fence so as much as the donkey tries to fuck the zebra, all it's really doing is fucking a chain link fence. And while that's fun for us watching to make fun of, it's actually kind of sad for the donkey. But eventually a new person is going to come by and show the donkey the attention it craves and once again he'll feel that people want to see him fuck the other donkey... and the cycle continues.

Don't get me wrong, I still feel there are some good uses for Twitter, but for the every day person who leads a (sorry) uninteresting life, there's no reason to post every thing you're doing because as I said before, NOBODY GIVES A SHIT!

82nd Annual Academy Award Nominations

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning with no real surprises. The ceremony will be held on March 7th and will be broadcast on ABC. I posted a list of the nominations after the jump if you're interested, but my predictions are below.

Best Picture - I hope it goes to The Hurt Locker or Inglorious Basterds, but there's some tough competition between Avatar and Up in the Air. And in a long shot I would love to see District 9 win, but it won't, but I'm glad they got the nomination.

Best Actor - I'm not too sure on this one since I haven't seen these movies, but I would like to see Jeff Bridges win this one.

Best Actress - I'm pulling for Sandra Bullock on this one.

Best Supporting Actor - If Christoph Waltz does not win this for Inglorious Basterds I will boycott the Oscars.

Best Supporting Actress - I honestly have no clue when it comes to this category so I'm not even going to try.

Best Director - I hope Kathryn Bigelow wins for The Hurt Locker, but I have a feeling James Cameron may walk away with this one. And my longshot pick is Tarantino.

Best Animated Feature - I hope UP wins this one, but a lot of people seemed to give Coraline a lot of praise, I found it kind of boring.

Best Original Screenplay - I think The Hurt Locker will get this one also, but possibly Inglorious Basterds.

Best Adapted Screenplay - Up In The Air will most likely win despite the fact that I have a hard-on for District 9.

Best Foreign Language Film - The Milk of Sorrow only because the title sounds awesome.

Best Film Editing - I think if District 9 can pull out one award it may be this one, it definitely had the most creative editing out of all the nominations, but again, Avatar may take it as well.

Best Documentary Feature - I've only seen Food, Inc. and wasn't too impressed so I'm not sure what to make of these nominees.

Best Art Direction - I think Nine or Avatar will take this one.

Best Cinematography - Either Avatar or Inglorious Basterds

Check out a full list of the nominees after the jump

Avatar + Pizza = Win?

This is a screen shot of an article on CNN.com right now about people seeing Avatar and getting depressed because they want to experience the beautiful world of Pandora, but it's fake. I just found it interesting that the guy in the 2nd row on the right decided that he was going to bring an entire pizza box into the theater and eat it while he watches. I guess his way to deal with depression is to eat, but I don't think that they have pizza on Pandora... I know the picture is from a press screening (or at least the people in the front are there for press), but who would really bring a pizza into a movie?
