The holy grail of killstreak rewards in Modern Warfare 2 is the Tactical Nuke. Coming after a 25 killstreak, you are rewarded with the satisfaction of wiping out every person on both teams and winning the match for your team whether you’re winning or losing. But a weapon that powerful is not easy to obtain without boosting or camping.

Normally when I play I have my killstreaks setup as Predator Missile, Harrier and Chopper Gunner. I had found that this combination made it pretty easy to get quite a few kills if you managed to get to the Predator Missile reward. Once you get the missile you can hopefully kill 1 guy and that leaves only 1 more kill before you get the harrier. Now, if you luck out and get 2 kills with the Predator Missile, good for you, now launch your harrier and hope it can get at least 4 kills which will get you the chopper gunner which you can then use to mow down everyone. Chopper Gunner is much more effective than the AC-130 in my opinion as it flies around the map faster and the gun can be constantly firing. So that was my original setup until I completed all the challenges for all of those killstreaks, now it was time for the nuke.

I had never even bothered to assign the nuke to a killstreak because I thought it was unattainable and therefore a waste of a reward, but with challenges to complete I went ahead and assigned it. The full breakdown of my killstreak rewards are now Harrier, Chopper Gunner and Nuke and it follows the same principle as above, but you need to get a lot more kills with the Chopper Gunner (14), so be on your game. Even with this killstreak setup it’s not an easy feat to accomplish and will still take true skill.

Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Impressions

I found some time over the weekend to sit down and dive into the campaign for Modern Warfare 2, and once I got in I couldn’t get out. After about 7.5 hours of playing I finally reached the end and defeated the threat against the United States. I won’t go into too much detail about the storyline because there are some cool twists and turns that I don’t want to spoil, so I’ll mostly talk about the flow of the story, the different levels and things of that nature.

When I got the first Modern Warfare game 2 years ago, I dove into the campaign mode on the “Hardened” difficulty level. I didn’t want to be held down by the looming “Veteran” level so I opted to play it a little safer. I knew I could beat the game on Normal pretty quickly so I wanted to make it last. After beating it on Hardened I did go back and beat everything on Veteran which gave me some nice replay value, but with Modern Warfare 2 I wasn’t really looking for replay value in the campaign, I just wanted to dive into multiplayer, which honestly made me feel a little guilty. The developers put all this time and energy into making a great single player campaign in addition to the multiplayer that everyone loves, so I felt that I needed to give the campaign a shot. This time around I dove headfirst in the campaign on the highest difficultly level, Veteran.

As you can probably tell based on the sheer amount of posts on the game, I’m a big fan of Modern Warfare 2 (and all of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty games), so there will probably be quite a few posts on here in the coming weeks revolving around MW2 and it’s different game modes and my experiences. I tried to give myself a little more time to play the game before writing this post, but I feel like I got the basic gist of things after about 7 hours of playing between the normal multiplayer modes as well as a few hours last night with the new Spec-Ops mode.  So I’m going to start this post with my first impressions of the new multiplayer experience and I will probably edit and add on to this post in the future.

First let’s start with the normal multiplayer mode. This is pretty much the reason why most people bought the game. The original Modern Warfare was incredible online and brought a whole new level to the game with the inclusion of unlockable guns and perks, among other things, but could MW2 surpass what was given to is in the first go around… In a simple answer, absolutely. Essentially Infinity Ward took all of the things that were great about the first one, the perks, rank levels, gun addons, etc and gave us even more. It seems as though they listened to the fans on some of these choices as well. For example, everyone complained that using the juggernaut perk on the first one was considered “noobish” or “cheating” since it made you harder to kill, so Infinity Ward scrapped it from what I can tell. And as far as martyrdom, which I continued to use in CoD4, it is now restricted to a death streak perk, meaning that only when you die multiple times in a row can you choose to drop a grenade as you die. They also did away with the x3 frag grenade perk as to cut back on grenade spamming, which is a welcome change I just wish they also got rid of the noob tube, aka the grenade launcher attachment for certain guns.

I’ve only had a chance to dive into the multiplayer aspect of Modern Warfare 2 for a few hours so far, but I made this post for CoD4: Modern Warfare so I figured I’d get it started now for MW2. I’ve posted overhead aerial views of each of the maps below (some after the jump). They come courtesy of another site, so I’ll post non-watermarked versions as soon as I can.  Also if you have good sniping spots, good strategies or any thing at all that can help out fellow players in multiplayer matches please leave a comment letting us know. Also, I can’t seem to remember all of the locations of the Flags in Domination (red dots on the maps) so if you can point them out on any of these maps please help me out. Thanks.  If you only see Afghan, the rest of the maps are after the jump.

Update: I’ve embedded a few videos that IGN has been putting out with some good “secret” spots on different maps, so check em out, they are at the bottom.

General Tips

  • Switching to the pistol is generally faster than reloading
  • To rack up kills use the following kill streaks: Care Package, Harrier, Emergency Air Drop. By using the care package at 4 kills you open yourself up to getting any number of cool things that can get you kills, and the harrier will drop an air strike and then hang around to kill more people, which should easily get you the Emergency Air Drop which is 4 random crates that can contain anything. The only problem is that care packages/emergency air drops do not count towards your kill streak. So if you have a hard time reaching that harrier you may want to think about using the predator missile instead.
  • As I just said, items you get in care packages and emergency air drops do not help towards your kill streak rewards.
  • In Domination Flag B is the key to winning, always send a few guys to capture B right away (on most maps)
  • When playing Sabotage, stealth perks are pointless if you intend on being the bomb carrier as your location will update on the map every few seconds. Instead, use the unlimited sprint perk and the lightweight perk so you can run faster than the pinpoint can keep up with.
  • Take advantage of tactical insertions when playing games like Domination and Capture the Flag. Set the tactical insertion near a flag so that when you die you’re always right there. A guy did this in a game yesterday, set his TI at “B” in Domination and it worked pretty well.
  • If you plan on running around knifing people all game use the Marathon, Lightweight and Commando Perks and make sure you have Care Package set as your 4 kill streak. If you pull out the care package smoke grenade you will run much faster than if you were just running.
  • Use killstreaks that will help your team. If you know you have a hard time reaching the harrier at 7 kills, don’t assign it. You’re better off assigning a UAV and Care Package which can help your team get their killsteaks and help you win the game.
  • If you’re looking to get a nuke use the following killstreak rewards: Harrier, Chopper Gunner and Nuke. Once you get the harrier find a good place to hide and then use it. Hopefully it will get you the 4 kills you need for the Chopper Gunner which will require a fairly good hiding spot or a team that’s willing to protect you. The hard part is getting another 14 kills with the chopper gunner, it’s a lot easier in hardcore.
  • One shot into a dark corner could save you from being killed by someone you can’t see.
  • Watch the kill cams and see where people are hiding and where the good places to go are. If you figure out these spots you’ll know where to look for enemies.
  • Try to stick together with at least 1 other person, it’s a lot easier to kill people if you’re teaming up on them than running around by yourself. Sure you may not get as many legit kills, but it’ll help your team in the end.
  • If you find yourself running out of ammo a lot before you die, use the scavenger perk. I had this problem before and now I don’t think I could go back to any of the other Perk 1’s.

Sniping Tips

  • Avoid moving around too much when laying down.
  • Try not to camp in one spot for the entire match, people are going to find you eventually so spread out.
  • Use perks to your advantage, Cold Blooded is a must, Ninja can be helpful to conceal your foot steps, and as for Perk 1 I usually just use Marathon so I can run from spot to spot with the quickness.
  • Claymores are also helpful so that people can’t sneak up behind you as easily, especially if you’re in a building with only 1 doorway in or out.
  • If you’re camping (in a non-hardcore match), after killing someone either keep looking down the sights for a few seconds, look right at a close object (wall or tree) or just look at the sky. Players who get sniped usually spend a second or 2 watching the kill cam to see where you’re camping from, but if all they see is a wall or the sky it will be harder for them to find you.
  • Practice Quick Scoping as the scope is centered as soon as you look down the sights, if you can get your timing down it’s very effective.

Modern Warefare 2 Available Now

Today is the day folks, Modern Warfare 2 has finally hit the shelves and is set to break all sorts of records based on early numbers. GTA IV previously held the record for the most pre-orders on Amazon.com but as of yesterday Modern Warfare 2 had 50% more pre-orders than Grand Theft Auto IV did, so if the numbers continue in that direction this could be a record breaking title for the guys at Infinity Ward.

Let us know if you got your copy already, did you wait in line at midnight? If you did and you took pictures of the midnight launch event you were at, post up the pictures we’d love to see em.

Those of you that have gotten the game already, does it live up to the hype? Is Xbox Live already littered with 12 year olds calling everyone “fags” and “n—-rs”? Let us know what you think, I’ll be posting a full review after I get through the single player campaign, which may or may not take a while depending on how obsessed I become with the multiplayer.

Update 11/12/09: The initial numbers are in and it looks like Modern Warfare 2 took in about $310 million in it’s first 24 hours, in only North America and the United Kingdom, making it the biggest selling launch in entertainment history. Grand Theft Auto 4 previously held the record with a similar $310 million sold in 24 hours, but those were worldwide figures where as Modern Warfare is only 2 countries. I will update this post again with final numbers when they are released. [source: huffington post]

Update 11/18/09: Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 2 has taken in $550 million in it’s first 5 days making it the biggest entertainment launch in history. It beat out GTA IV’s 5 day sales of $500 million and some Harry Potter movie’s $394 million 5 day launch.  So if you’re going by overall sales totals yeah Modern Warfare 2 trumps Harry Potter, but if you base it on the number of people that bought a copy of the game vs. a ticket to Harry Potter, I’m pretty sure more people saw Harry Potter considering a movie is ~$10 where as a video game is $60.
