Netflix for iPhone/iPod Touch Officially Released

Instead of wasting your time going through the hassle of hacking up the iPad version of the Netflix app to work on the iPhone/iPod Touch you can now just head over to the Netflix and download the app yourself. Netflix has officially released the Netflix app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This will allow you to stream TV Shows and Movies over both Wifi and 3G! It obviously requires a Netflix account, but it doesn't cost any extra money to stream to your iOS device.

Netflix Streaming on Your Jailbroken iPhone

By now I'm sure most of you know that there is a pretty sweet Netflix app out for the iPad, but currently there is no option for the iPhone. Sure, the official app is supposed to come out at the "end of the summer" (or something like that) according to Netflix, but I'm impatient and couldn't wait. So if you're like me and you can't wait and you've got a jailbroken iPhone, here's what you can do to get in on the fun a bit early, and yes you still need a Netflix account for this to work.

*Note: If you haven't jailbroken your phone, simply open safari (on the phone of course) and go to www.jailbreakme.com, then slide to jailbreak... that's it.

I can't take credit for these instructions as they have been posted a million places by now, but I figured one more place can't hurt. Plus I did it all last night it about 10 minutes and it works great.

  1. Jailbreak your phone (if you haven't already done so) jailbreakme.com
  2. Open Cydia and install OpenSSH (may have to reboot  your phone after it's done, I did)
  3. Download the Netflix iPad app from the iTunes Store (on a computer, not your phone)
  4. In your iTunes Library find the Netflix app and right click (option click if you don't have 2 buttons) and click Show in Finder (or Show in Windows Explorer if you're on a PC)
  5. Rename the Netflix 1.0.4.ipa to Netflix 1.0.4.zip, then extract the zip file.
  6. Open the folder that was extracted and then open the Payload folder within there, you should see Netflix.app (or just Netflix if you're not showing extensions. There should only be 1 file in the Payload folder)
  7. On the computer you now need to SSH into your phone (must be on wifi). I used Cyberduck (mac ftp client), but you can use terminal or any other ftp client that supports SFTP. To get the IP address for your phone you need to open Settings>Wifi, then click the little blue arrow on the wifi you are connected to, you should then see the IP address. Plug the IP address into your ftp client (make sure you're set to SFTP), using the username: root and the password: alpine (these are the defaults). This should get you a directory listing of your iPhone. If you can't figure this step out, Google is your friend.
  8. Within the FTP client you need to browse to /private/var/stash/Applications (or /Applications will get you to the same place.) and upload the Netflix.app from the iPad app we downloaded before, into that folder.
  9. Now you need to change the permissions of Netflix.app to 755 recursive. Mine was already set to 755, but not recursive. This step is going to be different for each FTP client, but if you're using a terminal client you can type: chmod -r 755 Netflx.app (if it gives you an error try typing: su root and if it prompts for a password, us alpine again, then try the "chmod" command again). We're now done with the computer.
  10. On the iPhone open Cydia again and download User Agent Faker. This will allow us to trick the Netflix app to think we're using an iPad.
  11. Open safari on your iPhone and browse to this article and copy the following: Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B334b Safari/531.21.10
  12. Go back to the home screen and open settings and find User Agent Faker, open it. Make sure it's enabled and then click on User Agent, then custom. Press back on the top left if it didn't go back to the main User Agent Faker screen, you should now see a place below "User Agent" where you can enter a custom string, paste that stuff we copied in step 11 into that box. And lastly click Applications at the bottom and turn safari on, then exit the app.
  13. Reboot Your Phone (full reboot, not respring)
  14. Once the phone has been rebooted open Safari and browse to Netflix.com, login to your account and find a movie you want to stream. Now when you select it, after a few seconds it will launch the Netflix app and begin streaming.

It's not the most glamorous method, but it works and despite there being 14 steps they are pretty simple and I tried to make them as easy to understand as I could. I know I ran into some vague instructions last night when doing it myself so I wanted to make sure other people weren't having the same issues. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I'll try to help if I can.

Update: For those of you that are curious as to how much data this is going to eat up I just ran a test and it looks like 5 minutes of streaming equates to about 17 megs. I believe this is one of the movies that is in HD as well, so it may be slightly less for a normal SD movie, but this should give you a rough idea of how much data you're looking at. So for a 90 minute movie you're looking at roughly 300 megs, so watch your data usage if you plan on using this over 3G without an unlimited plan.

Update (8/26/10): The Netflix App has been officially released in the App Store for iPhone/iPod Touch! Read More Here

Google Voice

I received an invite to join Google Voice yesterday even though I don't really think I have any need for the service, but hey it's Google and it's free so why not. To get the invite all I did was went to http://www.google.com/voice about 2 weeks ago, entered my information and waited. The invite arrived yesterday after I almost completely forgot about the service. I signed up, picked a number, linked it to my cell phone (since that's the only phone I have) and was on my way.... to something, I guess.

I got a pretty cool number, I think, it's the same forwards as it is backwards. I wanted to try and get a number like (xxx)awe-some, but numbers like that were already taken, so I settled. So what can you do with Google Voice? Well, I can call people from my computer, people can call my new number and I guess it rings my cell phone... people can leave voicemail and I can check it online and it also transcribes it to text which is kind of cool. I can also receive text messages to the new number and they forward to my cell phone and I can send/receive them online.

Now like I said, I really don't feel I have a use for this service since I only have 1 phone, my cell phone. So what is the point of me getting this new number just to have it forward to my cell phone? That doesn't seem to make any sense when people already know my cell phone number and can just call me on that. I thought maybe it could be used to save on minutes and texts, but first of all Apple denied the Google Voice app from the App Store and then removed the unofficial ones, and second of all Apps can't run in the background on the iPhone anyways, so if I got a call or a text to the Google Voice number it would just get forwarded to my cell phone as a call or text, thus using my minutes/texts from my cell plan. I have plenty of minutes on my plan, but my text messages are where I run into trouble. AT&T charges an arm and a leg for texts compared to the other carriers, $20 for unlimited texts on top of the iPhone data plan is a little ridiculous. That's $50 just for data, cause yes, texts are data and cost the cell companies next to nothing. So I was thinking that maybe I could use Google Voice for text messages now, but again there's no way for me to really get them on my phone besides having them forwarded as texts to my number, thus negating the purpose.

My iPhone is jailbroken so I was able to get the unofficial Google Voice app on my phone through other means, but it still doesn't help me in receiving texts. There are no push notifications for this app and no background processes (unless I wanted to run backgrounder, which I heard isn't entirely stable on the 3GS yet) so essentially I'd have to send a text and leave the app running while refreshing every couple of seconds to see if I got a new text. I did read that there is a round about way to use Prowl on the iPhone and Growl on your computer at home to send notifications to your phone, but I would have to leave a computer on all the time at home, and who knows what else. Just seems like too much work for me.

So really, the only thing that I've found useful about Google Voice is that I can leave it open at work and send/receive texts via the website all day without using my phone. It's a lot easier to type on a computer keyboard, it's free, and I look like I'm actually working! Basically I've found no use for this service yet, but I'm sure it's good for those of you that have multiple numbers and want may need to keep them organized, but for me I don't get it. Maybe I'll change all my domain registrar phone numbers to this number and maybe other business stuff, but we'll see.

Is anyone else using this service? Am I completely missing the point? Let me know if there's a good reason for a person with only 1 phone number (cell phone) to use this?

Quiznos Free Sub Coupons Experience

Earlier in the week a coupon appeared online from Quiznos offering a free small sub. There was no catch and the only restrictions were that it had to be a value sub or a signature sub. You didn't have to purchase anything else and the coupon only stated that tax may have to be paid. Still, .50 cents for a $4 sub isn't bad.

Now I haven't gone to Quiznos in a long time since they killed off the meatball sub, but apparently they brought it back recently and armed with a free coupon there was no reason not to pick up a sub for lunch on Monday. So I print out the coupon and head to Quiznos.

I always get a little leary of these free coupons for stuff thinking that the store in my area isn't going to be one of the participating stores, or that the coupon was fake. I figured the coupon was real as it came from a legitimate Quiznos owned website, so no worries there, but would they really just take a piece of paper and hand me a sub?

I walked in and showed the guy behind the counter the coupon, before I even ordered anything, and asked if they accept these. He looked at it for a couple seconds just to read the stipulations of the deal and then said no problem. So I ordered 2 small meatball subs. I got 2 because the small just isn't enough food. I paid for 1 of them and the other was completely free. The cashier didn't even check my id, he read that part of the coupon and laughed and just slid it in his drawer.

So my experience with the million free subs coupon from Quiznos was perfect, but I can't say as much for the sandwich itself. I've gotten overcooked meatballs from subway before, but never Quiznos, but these were disgusting. The meatballs were so burnt and nasty I could barely finish 1 of the subs let alone both. So while I did get my free sub, it was fucking disgusting and may have turned me off to Quiznos for a long time.

I've also read a bunch of complaints on The Consumerist about certain locations not accepting the coupons at all or making you buy a drink/chips in order to get the free sub. Some stores were even offering $2 off instead of the free sub. Now in my eyes this is ridiculous. It's a corporate issued coupon that the head offices should reimburse the store for anyways. But apparently Quiznos corporate has a tendancy not to reimburse the franchises for coupons, which is also ridiculous. Whyveould you run this huge promotion where you're trying to give away a million subs and then screw your franchise owners by not reimbursing them? Sounds like corporate is to blame for this fiasco. They should have notified each store and let them know what they were soon here and assured them that they would be reimbursed.

So this is just a warning, some stores will honor the coupon no problem, but other stores will give you a hard time and refuse. And technically it's within their rights to refuse since the coupon does state that it's only valid at participating locations... So be prepared to deal with rude managers/employees that don't want to honor the coupon.

Did anyone else try to take advantage of this offer? What was your experience like, leave us a comment.

You Gotta Pay The Troll Toll To Get Into The Boys Hole

The Nightman Cometh, what an amazing musical written by Charlie Kelly. I thought the season finale last night was hysterical from beginning to end. Some of my favorite parts were when Dee is signing the song about making love to a little boy and doesn't want to do it and Charlie flips out on her. Dennis taking over Mac's part so that he and Dee are supposed to make out after that song. Frank singing the troll toll song about paying the troll toll to get into the boys hole, which is supposed to be boys soul. The rape scene. Mac getting laughed at instead of the "gasps" he was going for. The cat eyes. Dennis becoming the Dayman and busting out of his pajamas and into the costume from Electric Dream Machine. Charlie coming down on the sun to sing to the waitress. The fact that the whole musical was just a ploy to ask the waitress to marry him. And what was up with her tonight, she looked really good for some reason, maybe it was because she was falling out of her shirt. Great episode. Don't forget to check out the behind the scenes clip and stream the FULL EPISODE after the jump!

Best lines of the night.
Charlie: I will slap your face right off your face!!

and

During Rape Scene: Dude, do you have a boner?

So that's it, the 4th season of It's Always Sunny has come to a close. At least this time we don't have to worry as to whether or not it will be picked up for another one since it's already been picked up for like 39 more episodes.

Dayman, ahhhhhaaaaaahhhhhhhh, Fighter of the nightman, ahhhhhhhaaaaaahhhhhhh, champion of the sun; he's a master of karate and friendship, for everyone.

Wow, just noticed the google ads at the top for this post... interesting and seemingly wrong...

And don't forget you can get the entire season on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Season 4 right now!
