Another week, another Sunny. This week it appears as though Dennis is going to finally reveal some of his secrets to getting women, although in the past I don’t know that we’ve actually seen him get with too many women so I’m a little leery as to how well this so-called system works. I guess we’ll find out tonight! And on a side note, did everyone pick up A Very Sunny Christmas? You can find our review of the ridiculous Christmas special here.

The D.E.N.N.I.S. System

Dennis tells the gang how he seduces women, but none of them can get the hang of it.

I’m warning you now, the recap below got a little long, I may have gotten slightly carried away with documenting everything that was going on, but it seems like they packed a lot of good stuff into this episode.

The D.E.N.N.I.S. system is the system that Dennis uses to seduce women and make them fall in love with him, even though they don’t know how madly in love with him they are, which is evident by the hateful voicemail his last conquest leaves for him, which he proudly plays for the gang.  And that is how the show opens, with this voicemail from a girl that is obviously quite pissed off at Dennis. It’s at this point that Dennis sits everyone down to the explain the DENNIS system. It’s a series of steps, of which the first letters of each step spell out DENNIS, thus the DENNIS system.

D – Demonstrate value
E – Engage Physically
N – Nurturing Dependence
N – Neglect Emotionally
I – Inspire Hope
S – Separate Entirely

Dennis explains how he Demonstrated his value to a cute pharmacist by forging a prescription and and telling her that his grandmother was very sick, thus making himself look like he has value. After explaining this Frank jumps in with his technique. He would have bought a box of magnum condoms thus demonstrating that he has a monster dong, which Dennis shot down and instead suggested that he have a magnum condom peaking out of his pocket when he goes to pay, much better plan.

The next step is to ask her out and move on to the next step which is to engage her physically. Dennis explains that he tries to get to this step to without going on the date at all because it’s a waste of time. He takes a girl to a restaurant that doesn’t take reservations, but he instead walks her in front of a restaurant that is always closed on Sundays at which point Dennis offers to just get a pizza and watch a movie back at his place. This is where Mac comes in, he sits on the couch pretending that there is a black widow spider in his room so he can’t go in there, thus forcing Dennis and the girl to eat pizza and watch a movie on Dennis’ bed, which eventually leads to sex. Great line here, when the girl says “Pizza’s good” Dennis’ response “You’re the one that’s good”, then they start to make out.

The next step comes after you’ve had sex, naturally all women will then become dependent on you for things. Nurturing dependence is making the girl depend on you for things. Dennis suggests slashing her tires or having her car towed in order for her to depend on your for a ride. Or his personal go to is to create a fictional angry neighbor of which you will take care of. In actuality it’s Dennis calling her using a threatening voice, from a pay phone.

The next step is to Neglect Emotionally, stop taking her phone calls, cancel all plans, call her back as the angry neighbor but don’t rescue her this time. Dennis’ angry laugh when it cuts back to the bar was classic. And this is the best time to move on with the next step to Inspire Hope. Dennis shows up at the girls window and explains that he was distant because he was scared she was going to break his heart at which point they bang. This scene is hysterical, playing Take My Breath Away in the background we see Dennis and the girl against a blue background as they bang. And after the sex comes the last step, Separate Entirely, which is where Dennis sneaks out the window never to see her again.

The gang at It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia decided that since the show usually ends its run on FX before the Christmas season they were going to put out a straight to DVD Christmas special entitled “A Very Sunny Christmas”. I recently happen to come into a copy of this episode and figured I’d give a quick review before it comes out on DVD next week so that you can make up your mind on whether or not to purchase it, although if you’re a fan of the show and own all the other DVDs I’m sure you are going to purchase this no matter what I say, and with that said, it’s definitely worth checking out.

I usually don’t like when TV shows take one episode and release it as a DVD because frankly it seems like a rip off.  This DVD lists for $17.99 on amazon, which is almost what you pay for an entire season of the show and this is only one ~42 minute episode. I’m not sure if there are a lot of special features or extras on the DVD itself since I did not watch a retail copy, but even with extras I don’t know that the DVD warrants the price. I will admit that it was a solid 42 minutes and compares to some of the funnier episodes we’ve seen this season, but again that price point just seems illogical. But enough about the price let’s talk about the actual episode.

Another week has gone by and it’s time for another It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. This week it sounds as if the gang gets hit hard by the recession and try to think of anything they can do to keep Paddy’s Pub from going under, although I never see them making any actual money so it’s a wonder the place is still open anyways.

With a shantytown taking shape outside, Mac and Dennis try to keep Paddy’s going in tough times. Meanwhile, Frank and Dee start a family business.

So honestly kind of a ‘meh’ episode. Basically the recession has hit the bar hard and Frank has lost all of his money so Dennis and Mac start firing everyone at the bar. Frank tries to hang himself but his neck is too fat so him and Dee decide to go into business together selling knives and vacuums. That doesn’t work out so well when Frank almost cuts his thumb off and bleeds all over a customers house and then when in the bathroom, attempts to hang himself, but instead he rips the light fixture out of the ceiling. Meanwhile, Charlie tries to show Dennis and Mac what he does at the bar in attempts to keep his job. Apparently Charlie’s daily activities consist of syphoning electricity from the neighbors, burning the trash to make the bar “green” as well as heat it and give it that smokey smell, and lastly he turns on the “coors” sign so people can see that they have cool delicious coors light, when in fact it’s a “closed” sign. So Dennis and Mac end up firing Charlie and locking him out of the bar so he can’t sleep there since he can’t sleep at home because Frank and Dee bought an RV and sublet their apartments as they embark on their door to door salesmen business.

So Charlie goes back to his mom’s house to try and stay in his old room, but she’s hit hard times too and had to sublet his old room to his creepy uncle Jack who apparently had wrestling matches with Charlie when he was a kid. Meanwhile Dennis and Mac go to Dave and Busters to chug Merlot while thinking of a way to stimulate the bar. They come up with the idea of using their own currency to fund the bar. So they create Paddy’s Dollars and pass them out to all of the shaty’s that have taken up shop outside the bar in their RV’s. So the idea is to pass out Paddy’s Dollars to get people to come in the bar initially and then once they run out of the free booze they will come back and buy more Paddy’s Dollars, thus creating a circle and stimulating business. Yeah, well this ends up backfiring since they passed out way too many Paddy’s Dollars and thus gave away all of their inventory for free. Not knowing what to do they come up with the idea of passing out more Paddy’s Dollars to bring people back in, but then they realize that, that is a terrible idea.

So Dee and Frank fail at selling knives so they go to visit Frank’s new business partner who happens to be Charlie who is sleeping in a box down by the river. Charlie pulls a wooden crate out of the river and claims that they are going to be crab people from now on, but before they can even get a solid business plan going Frank gets a phone call saying that the government is going to reimburse him for the money he lost in a ponzi scheme. So in the end the gang gets bailed out by Frank yet again and continues to be a burden on society.

“In recession times what thrives more than anything else…. prostitutes”  and apparently Dave and Busters and Coors, but not It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Why did this episode seem forced full of sponsors? Dave and Busters was pretty obvious and then Coors with the “coors” sign as well as Dee pushing the cold activated mountains when asked to prove her worth at the bar by making a mojito. Some moments felt more forced than others with the sponsors, but I really really hope that this isn’t something that’s going to be happening every episode from now on. I felt that it took away from the normal feel of the show and just made the Dave and Busters scenes feel “off”. Although I will say that Mac’s idea that the Dave and Busters power cards could possibly work at a TGI Fridays was kind of amusing.

So like I said I felt it was kind of a ‘meh’ episode compared to the first two this season, but I really think it was because of the pushing of sponsors, but it was not a terrible episode by far.

What did you guys think of the episode? Were the sponsor plugs just as obvious to everyone else?

The Gang Hits The Road (9/24/09)

After last weeks killer season premiere the gang is back and ready to hit the road. Apparently Frank has never seen the Grand Canyon before and wants to check it out before he dies, so the gang takes a road trip. Check back tomorrow for a mini-review of the episode.

The gang takes a road trip. Destination: the Grand Canyon.

And the gang delivers again. This season is starting off the with a bang and last night’s episode was another classic. Frank decides he wants to see the Grand Canyon before he dies so the gang decides to go on a road trip, however they forget to tell Dee that they are going and try to leave without her. Dee ends up buying a car that morning so she gets to work early since she didn’t have to take the bus, thus catching the rest of the gang as they are loading up a trailer and Dennis’ car for the trip.

Charlie was originally going to hang back with Dee because he is afraid of leaving Philly since he never has. He’s very worried the people are going to be dicks and mean to him, but now that Dee is going Charlie decides that he doesn’t want to sit around the bar by himself. So they load into the car and start on their journey. Not long after the trip starts, Charlie informs the gang that he has never had a pear in his life so Mac and Dennis make the decision to stop at the italian market to get a pear for Charlie , they also end up buying furniture and other stuff from the “gypsies” as they call them. And their bartering technique is less than stellar.

On the way to the italian market there is a bike rider in the middle of the road causing them to go slower than they would like. So Mac gets the brilliant idea that he’s going to throw a beer bottle past the guy to scare him a bit. Yeah, well he ends up hitting him in the head causing him to run into a parked car and Dennis ends up running over the bike, popping his 2 front tires. So they go back to the bar and steal Dee’s car while she’s in the bathroom because she has to pee every 5 minutes. As they leave the bar they get stuck at a red light and Dee comes running up to them and jumps in the car.

At some point Dennis and Charlie end up riding in the back of the u-haul with 2 wicker chairs and a small bbq. They have cracked the back door by duct taping beer bottles underneath it and Dennis assures Charlie that the BBQ will not slide under the door because the door isn’t open enough for that to happen. Yet as soon as they hit the next bump the BBQ collapses on itself and slides right out the back. Seeing as how Charlie and Dennis are both hungry now they decide the best idea is to smash the wicker chairs and light them on fire and roast the hot dogs over the flame. That doesn’t work out so well when they end up passing out due to some sort of coating the chairs had on them that was toxic.

Then at some point they pick up a hitch hiker so that Dee can play drinking games with Mac and Frank in the car while the hitch hiker drives them around. Dee ends up getting hammered and finds out that the kid is running away from home so she puts in the soul asylum tape and starts slurring runaway train to the kid. She then pisses in a bottle and empties it out the window which comes back in the back window all over Mac’s face. “Is This Piss”, probably one of the best scenes ever, see the animated gif below.

I’m sure there’s other stuff that happened, but this is getting too drawn out, go watch the episode. Needless to say they never make it out of Philly and Dee’s car gets stolen. Another classic episode from the Always Sunny crew.

Couple of animated gifs from this weeks episode after the jump.
