Oh Illinois Politics

s-SCOTT-LEE-COHEN-largeSo the people of Illinois have spoken and they have decided that their choice to run as the democratic nominee for Lt. Gov will be none other than Pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen. At first mention I thought ok sounds good, then all the background came pouring out. This man previously dated a prostitute, was arrested for allegedly holding a knife to his ex-wife’s throat, used to take roids (although so did most of baseball), and apparently owes back child support. Now I’m not condemning the guy and actually I have to give him props for having the balls to run with all the baggage but come on Dems how do you allow that to happen? In this day and age where you slander the hell out of your opponents on TV, instead of telling viewers of your own positive qualities, this guys gonna be a huge problem. Or maybe he wont, it recently occurred to me that here in Illinois we are so used to electing people who turn out to be corrupt crooks that maybe we figured we might as well start with a convict and see how that goes.  Oh well only time will tell.

First Look At The New Freddy Krueger

Here’s your first look at Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger in the re-boot of A Nightmare on Elm Street. I think Haley will do well playing the knife wielding nightmare stalker, I just hope the story itself is decent. If you don’t know who Jackie Earle Haley is, he played Rorschach in WATCHMEN.

Update: The first One-Sheet poster has hit the internet as well, check it out. Personally I think this looks pretty cool so far, like I said, I hope the story itself is good.

Illinois and Medical Marijuana

Illinois is one step closer to legalizing marijuana for medicinal use. The bill passed the House Committee today with a 4-3 vote. Honestly I don’t really know what that means in terms of it actually being legalized (for medicinal purpose), but it is the first step. This comes right after news last week that the DEA will no longer be raiding medical marijuana clubs/pharmacies in states that have passed a law to allow the legal use of marijuana for medical purposes. Basically even if a state passes a law making it legal, Federal law can still override that. So it just means that state police cannot enforce the law, but the DEA could still come in and make arrests, but it looks like they won’t even bother anymore. And with the economy the way it is, I say make it legal and tax the hell out of it. It will bring in a lot of money for the country and spur all sorts of economic growth and savings. And we’re not just talking about smoking it, stuff like paper and clothing can all be made from hemp. It would create a ton of jobs, spending, money from taxation, etc…

Whether you smoke the stuff or not, there’s no denying that the benefits of legalization would definitely stimulate the economy. And for all those people out there that say that it’s illegal for a reason, or it’s a gateway drug, or whatever your reasoning for not liking it, go do some research. More specifically research how many people marijuana has killed and how many people alcohol and tobacco have killed… I agree that there should be regulations on it, like a legal age of use just like alcohol and tobacco, and no driving under the influence, etc, but just educate yourself before you form an opinion. In dealing with people that both drink and have smoked in the past, I would much rather deal with someone that’s high than drunk, but my friends can be angry drunks so maybe it’s just me.

What do you think about this issue?

Over the past couple days I’ve read a bunch of blogs and stories about horrible experiences at car dealerships. The most recent being this story about one guys experience at a Chevy dealership. Him and his wife went in to look at the new Malibu, found one on the showroom floor that they absolutely loved. It had all the options they were looking for, no more no less, the color they liked, it was perfect. So they started filling out the paperwork to put down a deposit, which they did, and were going to come back the next day to finalize the deal, but when they got there and started filing out the financial paperwork the manager came up and informed them that the sales person that sold the car to them didn’t realize that it had been sold the night before to someone else. There’s more to this story and I suggest you head over to the link above and check it out, but it’s things like this that make me appreciate my experience when buying my current car. So I figured they deserved a good write up as opposed to all of these dealership horror stories out there.

Evanston Subaru located in Evanston, IL has been the exact opposite of all these other stories I’ve read about recently. My first purchase from them was back in 2003 when I bought my first ever new car, it was a 21st birthday present to myself. I had already done all of my research online regarding different options and pricing, etc so I knew exactly what I wanted, a 2003 Midnight Black Subaru WRX 5-speed Manual. I didn’t want any of the extra options, just the base model (which is already pretty nice compared to my previous car). I would check every day online at different dealerships in the area to see what they had as far as pricing and most of them were in the $24k range, which I didn’t really want to spend. I told myself I could afford 20K+tax/title etc, but not much more.

So I got in a car accident yesterday on my way home from work. I was less than a mile from my house on a slow side street heading towards the light at the main intersection. I could see the old shitty pick-up truck sitting in the alley trying to cross the road I was on (to get to the other alley), but apparently they didn’t see me. They started to pull out as soon as I was in front of them, luckily I caught a glimpse of them as they were about to hit me and I sped up. Sadly I was unable to go fast enough due to cars stopped at the light in front of me and the truck smashed into the back corner of my car… awesome my first car accident. And it only got better from there…

Nobody was injured, the truck was going maybe 4-5mph when it hit me, not even enough to spin my car even a little. So the truck pulls into the alley that it was attempting to get to in the first place, and stops. I back my car up and pull behind them in the alley and get out of the car to make sure they are ok. Two mexican guys get out of the car and are just fine, they walk over towards me and stand on the sidewalk as I call the police. Police are on their way as I stand there with these 2 guys looking at the damage on my car. Between the back wheel and the tail light is bent way in and scraped up, the tail light is intact and works fine and there is no rubbing on the back tire or damage to the tire/rim, the car is totally driveable. As I’m inspecting the damage the two gentlemen start talking to me, the driver asks if he can just give me money and be on his way. I told him that I had already called the cops and they were on their way so I wasn’t taking any money as it wasn’t my fault. Then the real reason comes out, the driver has no license and no insurance and neither does the other guy that was in the car. So now I’m more angry at that than anything else. They keep trying to get me to follow them to a body shop down the street to get an estimate so they can just give me money without getting the cops involved, I decline and pull out my phone to take down their license plate information and a description of the truck as I just have this gut feeling that they are going to run.
