82nd Annual Academy Award Nominations

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning with no real surprises. The ceremony will be held on March 7th and will be broadcast on ABC. I posted a list of the nominations after the jump if you’re interested, but my predictions are below.

Best Picture – I hope it goes to The Hurt Locker or Inglorious Basterds, but there’s some tough competition between Avatar and Up in the Air. And in a long shot I would love to see District 9 win, but it won’t, but I’m glad they got the nomination.

Best Actor – I’m not too sure on this one since I haven’t seen these movies, but I would like to see Jeff Bridges win this one.

Best Actress – I’m pulling for Sandra Bullock on this one.

Best Supporting Actor – If Christoph Waltz does not win this for Inglorious Basterds I will boycott the Oscars.

Best Supporting Actress – I honestly have no clue when it comes to this category so I’m not even going to try.

Best Director – I hope Kathryn Bigelow wins for The Hurt Locker, but I have a feeling James Cameron may walk away with this one. And my longshot pick is Tarantino.

Best Animated Feature – I hope UP wins this one, but a lot of people seemed to give Coraline a lot of praise, I found it kind of boring.

Best Original Screenplay – I think The Hurt Locker will get this one also, but possibly Inglorious Basterds.

Best Adapted Screenplay – Up In The Air will most likely win despite the fact that I have a hard-on for District 9.

Best Foreign Language Film – The Milk of Sorrow only because the title sounds awesome.

Best Film Editing – I think if District 9 can pull out one award it may be this one, it definitely had the most creative editing out of all the nominations, but again, Avatar may take it as well.

Best Documentary Feature - I’ve only seen Food, Inc. and wasn’t too impressed so I’m not sure what to make of these nominees.

Best Art Direction – I think Nine or Avatar will take this one.

Best Cinematography – Either Avatar or Inglorious Basterds

James Cameron Made Me Eat My Words

In a previous post I made it known that the trailer for James Cameron’s AVATAR seemed a little too ‘cartoony’ for me and I wasn’t planning on seeing it for that reason alone. Well after seeing it yesterday I’ve officially changed my mind, but I still stand by my point that the trailer looked way to much like a Shrek movie.

We saw AVATAR yesterday in all it’s 3-D glory and while I will say that I was damn impressed with the actual movie/storyline as well as the special effects and visuals, I’m still going to have to say that I don’t think the 3D technology is quite there yet. I went into this hoping the 3D was better than when I saw My Bloody Valentine 3D earlier this year, but it was pretty much the same. Now obviously the epicness of the movie far surpassed that of “Valentine”, but I still found the 3D aspect of the film lacking. With so much going on on the screen it was hard to focus at some points thus making the 3D just one big blur. But that being said it must not have been that bad because there’s no way I could recommend seeing this movie without seeing it in 3D, but I will definitely recommend not seeing it in IMAX. The IMAX screen is just way too big and like I said before, there is so much going on that it’s hard enough trying to focus on all of it without having to pan your head back and forth to see the whole screen.

As far as the actual movie and story goes, I enjoyed it. I did find a few sections to be a little drawn out and I started to get a little antsy once we started nearing the 2 hour mark, but that may have had something to do with the rude woman sitting next to me who repeatedly could not find the cup holder for her drink and kept trying to set it in my lap. But all that aside I definitely enjoyed the movie a lot more than I expected to based on what I had seen in the trailers. And before I end this I just want to say that the CGI and motion capture in the movie was absolutely incredible. Obviously the first time you see the AVATAR or the Na’vi they are going to look fake to you since it’s obviously not real, but once the film becomes immersed in the world of Pandora, things begin to look a lot more realistic and eventually you’ll completely forget that it’s a fictional planet.

So congratulations to James Cameron and crew, I think you’ve finally made your “Star Wars”.

AVATAR – Will it Fail?

If you’re not familiar with “Avatar” it is James Cameron’s new movie featuring a lot of blue people. Actually the movie follows a soldier that is recruited to participate in a “procedure(?)” (I don’t really know what to call it) that takes his mind and basically puts it into an “Avatar” which is a hybrid-type Na’vi creature. The Na’vi are the native people of the planet Pandora. Soon after he becomes this “avatar” he falls in love with a Na’vi woman and is then caught in the middle of a military operation and his feelings, or something along those lines.

It sounds like it could be decent, but is it going to be the huge hit that Cameron and critics think it will be? I’m going to come out right now and say that it’s going to be the Waterworld of today. For those of you unfamiliar with the “Waterworld” analogy, it was a movie made in 1995 with Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper where the whole world was covered with water and everyone lived on floating barge towns or tanker ships. The only key to survival was tattooed on the back of a young child that everyone was trying to get their hands on. The tattoo was the coordinates to Mt. Everest which is the tallest place on Earth, thus would seem the only likely place that land would still exist if the world flooded as badly as portrayed in the movie. Now it wasn’t the premise of the movie that was the issue it was the budget. At the time “Waterworld” was the most expensive movie ever produced. It cost $175 million to produce (which in today’s standards would be closer to $230 million) and only grossed $88 million at the domestic box office. In the end the film ended up turning a profit if you take into account foreign box office number and home video/DVD sales and since then there have been quite a number of movies that have bombed far worse that “Waterworld” did, but at the time it was unheard of for a movie to cost so much money to produce.

With that in mind, “Avatar” is now rumored to be the most expensive production ever, that title was previously held by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End which cost $300 million to produce. So taking that into account we know that “Avatar” is rumored to be costing the studio more than that, but would you believe that the estimates are closer to $500 million!! That’s a lot of cash to be dumping into an original story with no existing fanbase. I understand that people put James Cameron and his movies up on a pedestal mainly because he’s only made a handful of movies and has a pretty good track record. His past movies include Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens, The Abyss and of course Titanic. All of his movies have been successful and with the success of his last movie, Titanic, I think it was only fair that the studio give him a blank check to create something new.

Cameron has had the idea for Avatar for a while, but he said that he’s been waiting for the technology to catch up so he could create it the way he wanted to and apparently that time is now, but does it really have the power to be as big of a success as he wants it to be? I don’t think so. Besides the fact that it is a brand new story with no history and no existing fan base, you already lose those people that would see it just to see it if they were already fans of the storylines or characters. The next downside is that it’s a science fiction movie. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of sci-fi, but it doesn’t have as broad of a fan base as say a comedy, drama or even an action movie. And the third thing, which bothers me the most, is the use of CGI. I understand that, that was the whole point of waiting to make the movie, the CGI wasn’t up to par yet, but from the trailers it looks like an animated movie. Almost like a “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” if it were made today. The Na’vi creatures look way to fake to me in the trailers, maybe they cleaned them up a bit in the final product, but I really didn’t like the way they looked in the trailers, it was very distracting. Even some of the backgrounds and whole action sequences seem way to fake. I like practical effects that are “enhanced” by CGI, not sequences that rely so heavily on CGI that they look like a cartoon.

So those are the biggest things that I think are going to lead this movie to flopping. I’m sure it’s going to make a good amount of money and will probably do much better in blu-ray sales than box office numbers, but I don’t think it’s going to live up to the hype that Cameron and the studio are putting on it. I did see that there was a test screening last week and that everyone seemed to love the movie, but I still have my doubts. I most likely will not be seeing it in the theater, but I am curious to see how it does. I wish Cameron and company the best of luck and I hope they prove me wrong as I’m a fan of his work (Aliens especially), but we’ll just have to wait and see.

So what do you guys think? Do you think this movie is going to be as big of a success as everyone is predicting/hoping? Are you planning on seeing in the theater? I’d like to hear any opinions regarding the movie as I’m curious as to what everyone else is thinking…

Am I the only one that isn’t looking forward to James Cameron’s “Avatar”? The only thing I got out of the trailer was the gross overuse of CGI, and poor CGI at that. I don’t know if I’m missing the point of the movie or if there is some back story or something I’m just not getting, but I am not impressed at all. Don’t get me wrong James Cameron is an incredibly talented writer/director. Terminator, The Abyss, Titanic, Aliens, all incredible movies, but Avatar just doesn’t look like a good movie to me.

It’s no secret that Cameron hasn’t directed a big budget Hollywood movie since Titanic in 1997 and everyone has been hailing Avatar as his triumphant return to the big screen, but I just have this feeling that the movie isn’t going to live up to people’s expectations, whether it’s box office or the movie itself. I think I have the story right, but if there’s something I missed from the trailer please let me know. So a paralyzed man goes to some planet that is inhabited by some type of blue humanoid creatures and in order to do something or save someone his consciousness must be implanted into the body of one of these creatures or a hybrid of a human and one of these creatures so that he can blend in and interact with the creatures. Did I get that pretty much right?

In theory it sounds decent and fairly original, but the execution (based on the trailer) looks terrible. If I didn’t know better I would have thought that it was a CG movie in the veins of Final Fantasy Advent Children or something similar where everyone is CG, but the humans look extremely real and detailed. However, that’s not what this is. It’s a live motion movie that uses CG to do the creature effects and all of that stuff, very similar to all movies these days, but I thought it looked absolutely terrible. The CG creatures looked totally out of place and totally fake. Yeah yeah, I know the creatures are obviously fake and they need to use computers in order to do what they want to do, but I’ve seen much better effects in movies that came out 10 years ago. Maybe I’ll have to take another look at it, but I don’t see why there is so much hype surrounding this movie other than the fact that James Cameron hasn’t made a movie in over 10 years.

I think Hollywood is going to be disappointed with the box office performance of this one. Maybe if it was released only a few years after Titanic or even before Titanic and people still had James Cameron’s name on their minds it would do better, but movie viewers these days (mostly kids/teenagers) aren’t going to really know James Cameron by name or his past accomplishments so that’s not going to be a huge draw. And the trailer itself didn’t really do anything to spark interest in me, it actually deterred me from checking this out in the theater due to the overuse of CG in the character design and the overall look and feel is just too computer generated to me. Film makers need to realize that CG should not be used in place of practical effects, but more of a tool to enhance those effects. I don’t think the technology is quite there yet where you can realistically create characters like this based solely on CG. There are always those moments when you can tell that something was created in a computer whether it’s due to inaccurate lighting or just overall poor model design/lack of detail. Look at Guillermo Del Toro and the amazing creatures he’s created in the past couple years in movies like Pan’s Labyrinth and HellBoy. Sure some of them are CG, but most of them are practical costumes and physical effects that are enhanced with the use of CG and they look amazing.

I honestly hope I’m wrong about Avatar and it comes out and completely blows my mind, but just based on the trailer I’m not excited about this one at all. And I know I’ll probably catch a lot of shit about this one because the internet crowd seems to be in love with this movie, but I just don’t get it. Like I said, maybe I’m just missing something and I’ll be completely blown away when it comes out, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Are you guys really excited about this? What were your impressions of the trailer?
