Mini Movie Review: Boy Eats Girl

This movie has been in my netfilx queue for a long time and I kept pushing it further down the list, as I didn't really want to see it, I honestly don't even remember where I first heard about it and what made me want to see, but it came in the mail the other day and I had to check it out. The movie is about a guy who accidentally hangs himself after the girl he loves blows him off. Yeah, "accidentally" kills himself, as in he got hammered and put a noose around his neck (that he happened to have in his bedroom hanging from the ceiling), and when his mom walked in to turn the stereo down she knocked the chair he was standing on and it hung up. Not wanting everyone to think she was a bad mother she immediately ran and stole some old spell book from a churches crypt and brought her son back to life. But of course things couldn't go that smoothly, apparently there were pages missing from the book and without those pages the re-animated person would basically be a zombie. Not your typical undead zombie, but the flesh would start to decay and he craves human flesh, and like zombies, if he bites anyone they then turn into a "real" zombie. That's the basic overall premise of the movie....

It wasn't horrible, I guess. There was some interesting humor throughout the movie and some decent death scenes, but the acting wasn't the greatest and some of the plot didn't really make sense. Not "sense" as in I didn't understand it, but more like, couldn't they have come up with a better way to re-animate the main character than a shady cult book in some random church crypt. I guess not. The movie itself is extremely short, only about an hour and 10 minutes, yet I still started to fall asleep towards the end, but I'm glad I didn't. There is a scene at the end that crams so much blood and body parts into 2 minutes it would make Freddy Krueger retire (probably not, but there was still a shitload of death). So overall I can't really recommend the movie if you're not into stupid horror movies. While it wasn't the worst movie I've seen, I probably won't be buying this for repeat viewings.

Mini Movie Review: Cannibal! The Musical

One of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's first movies and I can't believe it's taken me this long to check it out. The movie follows a group of people that are heading to Colorado to get in on the gold rush, but they get lead astray by their leader when he goes after his horse that was stolen. The group ends up out of ideas and out of food, which leads them to eat each other, basically. The movie has some very creative songs, but not too many like Sweeney Todd, which I found hard to sit through after a while because it was all singing. There's definitely singing in this one, but there is also a good amount of normal dialogue to move the story along. So if you saw the word "Musical" and got scared away, don't worry, you'll survive.....

At first I kept thinking to myself "What the fuck am I watching?" Then after a little while I started getting into it and by the end, I loved it. There may be a few spoilers ahead, but the movie has been out for years so whatever. I couldn't stop laughing at the guy near the end that gets stabbed with a cleaver in the face, then another knife and finally a pick axe, yet some how manages to survive. And the snowman song had me almost in tears. If you're a fan of South Park or anything else that these guys have done, and for some reason you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out. I think a new version is either coming out or just came out, some special edition anniversary restore DVD. It's worth a watch and if possible I would highly recommend "altering your experience". Personally I was sober and still loved it, but I could see how it could be even more retarded/hysterical after a relaxing "J" or a few beers.

Mini Movie Review: Son of Rambow

Unlike my last review, this movie was actually very good. I didn't know a whole lot about it going in, I had read a few excerpts that said it was a great movie and I figured it might be worth checking out. The movie is about 2 boys that come together to create a movie based on "Rambo". Based on what I read I thought the boys were remaking Rambo themselves, but it turns out they are making a completely different movie, based on the Son of Rambow coming to save Rambo from the evil scarecrow.

I always have a hard time understanding English accents sometimes so a little bit of the dialogue was hard to understand, especially when the French kid tries to speak English, but it doesn't take away from the movie at all. I highly recommend this one if you want to check out something a little different from the mainstream blockbuster studio movies that Americans are used to these days. It has a great story and great characters and a good mix of humor and action. Check this one out.

Mini Movie Review: Fahrenheit 9/11

I'm going to tell you right now that I'm probably a bit bias when it comes to Michael Moore's movies since I think the guy is a complete hack. He edits his movies in such a way that only his point gets across and nothing else. Bowling For Columbine used interviews and clips that were taken completely out of context and edited to promote his ideas. And knowing that going in made me a little leary of everything that was said, but that's not to say that it wasn't interesting... sometimes. I don't know what I was expecting going in to this... actually I thought it was going to be about some of the underlying conspiracies surrounding 9/11, but it really wasn't. I don't know why I had that in my mind and maybe it was my fault for expecting that, but what I got out of this wasn't really anything I didn't already know. Now granted it's been a few years since this movie came out and I only put it off because of my hatred of Michael Moore, but I decided to at least give it a viewing. While it was informative on some stuff, it seemed like Moore was just stating the same things over and over again and it got old fast. The movie could have been about 30 minutes shorter if he didn't constantly talk about the same things. Personally I'd rather watch a documentary on TV about the different 9/11 conspiracy theories than watch Michael Moore waddle around his home town of Flynt Michigan... speaking of which, does he ever go anywhere else and interview "normal" people or will nobody but his hometown welcome him?

If you're a fan of Michael Moore, I'm sorry, but you may enjoy this movie, you may not, I thought parts were interesting, but overall it wasn't anything special or explosive.
