The gang at It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia decided that since the show usually ends its run on FX before the Christmas season they were going to put out a straight to DVD Christmas special entitled “A Very Sunny Christmas”. I recently happen to come into a copy of this episode and figured I’d give a quick review before it comes out on DVD next week so that you can make up your mind on whether or not to purchase it, although if you’re a fan of the show and own all the other DVDs I’m sure you are going to purchase this no matter what I say, and with that said, it’s definitely worth checking out.

I usually don’t like when TV shows take one episode and release it as a DVD because frankly it seems like a rip off.  This DVD lists for $17.99 on amazon, which is almost what you pay for an entire season of the show and this is only one ~42 minute episode. I’m not sure if there are a lot of special features or extras on the DVD itself since I did not watch a retail copy, but even with extras I don’t know that the DVD warrants the price. I will admit that it was a solid 42 minutes and compares to some of the funnier episodes we’ve seen this season, but again that price point just seems illogical. But enough about the price let’s talk about the actual episode.

Here is the plot line for tonight’s episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, it looks like green man may be making an appearance. I’ll be back tomorrow with a rundown of the episode.

The World Series Defense

The gang go to court to talk their way out of a parking ticket they got on the night of the final game of the 2008 world series.

(Updated with a transcript of Mac’s love letter to Chase Utley after the jump below.)

When Dennis gets a series of parking tickets worth over $1000, the gang heads to court to plead their case and hopefully get the tickets revoked. The story starts with the gang getting ready for the game at the bar, Frank and Charlie are itching like crazy due to bed bugs as Mac is making Riot Punch (gatorade mixed with everclear to taste) to tailgate. Everyone is wearing Phillies colors except Dennis, until he rips his shirt off displaying paint on his chest. Then they start discussing their plan, apparently in the bottom of the 9th Dennis and Mac are going to start fighting which will cause a distraction while Dee runs out on the field and kisses a player. Charlie then jumps in saying he wants to jump onto the field and run around as Green man, but Mac and Dennis defend the Phillie Phanatic which pisses off Charlie.

It then comes to light that Frank left the tickets back at the apartment so they split up, Charlie and Dennis head to the parking lot to tailgate while Frank, Mac and Dee head to the apartment to get the tickets only to find out that the building is being fumigated for bed bugs. Mac decides that he’s going to scale the building, cut a hole in the tent and climb in, thus limiting the exposure time.

Meanwhile at the parking lot Dennis and Charlie try to figure out a way to sneak in to the game. Charlie seems to think that there is a secret tunnel from the stadium back to the hotel so that opposing players can get to the hotel safely without Phillies’ fans beating them. The other idea is for Dennis to jump in front of a car and then threaten to sue unless the passengers give them their tickets. Charlie can’t do it because he’s already done it too many times and is afraid this time could be his last, but Dennis convinces him to do it anyways. So they stand behind a parked car waiting for an expensive car to drive by so he can jump in front of it, but as a Mercedes comes down the lot Charlie pushes Dennis in front of the car. And on top of all of that the passengers of the car saw Charlie push Dennis so they didn’t give up the tickets.

Back at the apartment building Mac fails miserably at scaling the building because he can’t get a good grip, but Frank has an idea. He finds a garden hose and sucks on one end as he goes in the building, leaving the other end outside to pump fresh air in the building. While Frank is doing this Dee is trying to decide who to run out on the field and kiss. Mac pushes Chase Utley because apparently he wrote a love letter to him, he even put cute little stickers on it. And this isn’t the only letter that Mac as written… apparently Mac wants him to read the letter and realize that he’s always wanted a younger brother, but then Dee informs him that Chase is like 5 years younger than him. It is then that they realize that the hose that Frank was using to breath fresh air was no longer on the outside of the building so they go in to save him, but all end up choking in the hallway with the tickets nowhere to be found.

So back at the parking lot Dennis is all banged up after getting the car, but Charlie has an idea on how to get tickets. He puts on Greenman and goes up and starts talking to the Phillie Phanatic who starts giving him shit. Eventually Charlie loses it and starts beating on the Phanatic, which then causes the other Philly fans to start beating up Charlie.

So Mac, Dennis and Frank make their way to the parking lot with their eyes full of blood from the poison. They need to come up with another way to get into the game and off the top of his head Mac comes up with scaling the facade, but Dennis informs him that he only works out his glamor muscles and there’s no way he could scale the stadium, which then leads to a push-up contest both in the parking lot and in the court room.

Charlie wanders back over after getting hammered by the Phillies fans which reminds Dee of the tunnel under the hotel. Charlie and Dee seem to be the only ones that believe the rumors of the tunnel, but with no other option the gang heads to the hotel basement to look for it. They find a room that looks like it could lead to a tunnel, it turns out it’s a linen closet, but Charlie is sure that there is a secret tunnel behind a shelf because that’s where the secret tunnels are in scooby doo. While they are looking for a tunnel the door locks behind them and locks them in. It’s then that Charlie finds a secret tunnel which leads them into a dungeon with murdered Philly fans.

Cut back to the court room and the judge asks if they really found the dungeon, but it was a lie to spice up the story because they felt that the judge was losing interest. It then comes to light that the gang was stuck in the linen closet for 6 days which is how the parking tickets were amassed. The judge decides that the parking tickets stand and Charlie and Dennis call kangaroo court and then Charlie brings up his counter-suit against the Fanatic and is promptly escorted out of the court room.

It was a decent episode, not as great as some of the previous ones this season, but it was nice to see Greenman in another episode and the preview for next week looks pretty good. What did you guys think of last nights episode?

And based on popular search results pertaining to this post I have transcribed Mac’s Chase Utley love letter after the jump, enjoy.

The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention (10/8/09)

This sounds like it’s going to be another classic It’s Always Sunny episode.

Frank’s behavior is more bizarre than usual — so bizzare that even the gang notice — so they decide to stage an intervention.

So Frank has a drinking problem and it’s beginning to annoy the gang. The episode starts off with everyone in the car headed to a “BBQ”. Frank is in the back drinking box wine out of a can. When they pull up to the “BBQ” they realize that they are at a funeral for Frank’s wife’s sister’s husband, or Dennis and Dee’s uncle. The whole reason they go to the funeral is because Frank wants to bang his wife’s sister, but once Mac gets a look at her he wants to bang her and convinces Frank to go after Gail the Snail instead. Gail the Snail is the “Garbage Pail Cousin” as Dennis and Dee have dubbed her. She’s the crazy ugly looking cousin that they used to throw salt on in order to keep her away, but they aren’t proud of it.
So Dennis, Dee and Charlie go meet with a person that will help give Frank an intervention because he wants to bang their aunt, but Charlie is more upset not because Frank is drinking, but because Frank is drinking without him. Then the conversation moves towards Frank’s gun and that the intervention lady should probably be armed at the intervention. Charlie wants to ambush Frank with a net or a rope device to bring him to the intervention and hopefully have the gun fall out of his pants. It’s at this point that the intervention lady brings up the fact that Dee has been drinking wine out of a can the whole time which everyone thinks is a brilliant idea.
And now one of the greatest scenes, Frank is gargling beer as him and Mac are walking down the street. Mac convinces Frank to bang Gail the Snail, but Frank is too busy belching/burping/gargling or something. Back at the bar Dennis comes up with the idea to write letters to Frank, so Charlie starts dictating what he wants Dennis to write in his letter and he brings up the fact that him and Frank never play Night Crawlers anymore. Which is apparently Frank and Charlie crawling around like worms at night. At this point Dee walks in banging on a pot, still drinking canned wine and the gang starts to join in on this new found way to drink.
Frank wakes up at “the snail’s” house and finds Mac cooking breakfast in the kitchen in an attempt to impress Frank’s wife’s sister, Donna. Meanwhile the snail is giving Frank a handy under the table, but ends up just mashing it. So Donna kicks everyone out of the house and the snail goes with Mac claiming that he’s her new boyfriend.
Back at the bar Dennis, Dee and Charlie are setup for an intervention with the intervention lady. The whole gang is drinking boxed wine out of cans as they confront Frank about his issues, but he thinks that he’s being roasted. Instead of intervening they just yell at Frank and call him an asshole and Charlie asks Frank why they don’t play Night Crawlers anymore and basically it just turns into the gang yelling “intervention” at each other when they see something they don’t like and it comes out that Mac banged Frank’s wife. It’s at this point that Charlie starts throwing salt all over Gail the Snail to push her out of the bar.
And that’s about it, another very solid episode, season 5 is shaping up to be a pretty good season. After the jump check out the animated gif of Frank belching

The Gang Hits The Road (9/24/09)

After last weeks killer season premiere the gang is back and ready to hit the road. Apparently Frank has never seen the Grand Canyon before and wants to check it out before he dies, so the gang takes a road trip. Check back tomorrow for a mini-review of the episode.

The gang takes a road trip. Destination: the Grand Canyon.

And the gang delivers again. This season is starting off the with a bang and last night’s episode was another classic. Frank decides he wants to see the Grand Canyon before he dies so the gang decides to go on a road trip, however they forget to tell Dee that they are going and try to leave without her. Dee ends up buying a car that morning so she gets to work early since she didn’t have to take the bus, thus catching the rest of the gang as they are loading up a trailer and Dennis’ car for the trip.

Charlie was originally going to hang back with Dee because he is afraid of leaving Philly since he never has. He’s very worried the people are going to be dicks and mean to him, but now that Dee is going Charlie decides that he doesn’t want to sit around the bar by himself. So they load into the car and start on their journey. Not long after the trip starts, Charlie informs the gang that he has never had a pear in his life so Mac and Dennis make the decision to stop at the italian market to get a pear for Charlie , they also end up buying furniture and other stuff from the “gypsies” as they call them. And their bartering technique is less than stellar.

On the way to the italian market there is a bike rider in the middle of the road causing them to go slower than they would like. So Mac gets the brilliant idea that he’s going to throw a beer bottle past the guy to scare him a bit. Yeah, well he ends up hitting him in the head causing him to run into a parked car and Dennis ends up running over the bike, popping his 2 front tires. So they go back to the bar and steal Dee’s car while she’s in the bathroom because she has to pee every 5 minutes. As they leave the bar they get stuck at a red light and Dee comes running up to them and jumps in the car.

At some point Dennis and Charlie end up riding in the back of the u-haul with 2 wicker chairs and a small bbq. They have cracked the back door by duct taping beer bottles underneath it and Dennis assures Charlie that the BBQ will not slide under the door because the door isn’t open enough for that to happen. Yet as soon as they hit the next bump the BBQ collapses on itself and slides right out the back. Seeing as how Charlie and Dennis are both hungry now they decide the best idea is to smash the wicker chairs and light them on fire and roast the hot dogs over the flame. That doesn’t work out so well when they end up passing out due to some sort of coating the chairs had on them that was toxic.

Then at some point they pick up a hitch hiker so that Dee can play drinking games with Mac and Frank in the car while the hitch hiker drives them around. Dee ends up getting hammered and finds out that the kid is running away from home so she puts in the soul asylum tape and starts slurring runaway train to the kid. She then pisses in a bottle and empties it out the window which comes back in the back window all over Mac’s face. “Is This Piss”, probably one of the best scenes ever, see the animated gif below.

I’m sure there’s other stuff that happened, but this is getting too drawn out, go watch the episode. Needless to say they never make it out of Philly and Dee’s car gets stolen. Another classic episode from the Always Sunny crew.

Couple of animated gifs from this weeks episode after the jump.
