South Park: Crippled Summer (4/28/10)

Let's see how South Park bounces back after being [unfairly] censored last week. Judging by the plot synopsis for tonight it sounds like there could be some very offensive stuff going on, but I'm sure it won't lead to Comedy Central feeling they need to ban the characters of Timmy and Jimmy after complaints from the disabled people of the world... I'm just speculating here, I'm not aware of any death threats on Matt and Trey from people with disabilities. So how do you think Jimmy will do in the surfing competition?

Crippled Summer

Jimmy and Timmy go to summer camp with a winner-take-all attitude in a variety of contests, including Jimmy's participation in a surfing competition.

I thought this week's episode was decent. I'm glad they brought Towlie back, I missed that guy and the Intervention mock was classic. I'm not sure if I really liked the whole Cripple Camp thing, not because it offended me, but it just wasn't that funny. The running gag of the big idiot always screwing up the captain's instructions started to get old, but I will say that when the shark started raping him I lost it. So I don't really have much else to say about the episode, it was a little 'meh' in my book, but definitely not the worst episode I've seen.

What did you guys think?

The Simpsons Support South Park

The image above is from the opening credits from this weeks 'The Simpsons' episode. Now maybe Family Guy will jump on board... but probably not.

South Park: 201 (4/21/10)

This week's South Park is a continuation of last week's 200th episode. We were left hanging at the end of last week without word as to whether or not they were going to finish the story, but thankfully they are.

201

The identity of Cartman's dad is on everyone's mind despite threats from the ginger kids about Muhammad and enraged celebrities who have harnessed the power of Mecha Streisand.

The continuation of the epic 200th episode was actually pretty good. It continued the idea of bringing back old characters and other aspects of previous episodes, but did so without making it a normal clip show, which I thought was genius.  I thought everything about the episode was good, but I still have a question... Did Comedy Central bow to the threats from the Muslim community and make Matt and Trey bleep out the use of the word Muhammad, or did they choose to do that? I know at the end of the episode that used the bleeps to continue a running joke by basically bleeping out what everyone learned during the 2 episodes, but I'm still not sure as to whether the word Muhammad was originally supposed to be bleeped. It just doesn't seem like Matt and Trey to bleep something, but I wouldn't put it past Comedy Central.

A few things before I'm done here. I loved how they turned Tom Cruise into a big "censored" bar after he stole Muhammad's goo, showing that he was now immune to being made fun of. And then as soon as Seaman jumped on his back and the kids made mention of it he turned back into Tom Cruise, since he thought he was being made fun of. Good stuff. I also loved the reveal of who Cartman's dad really was. The Scott Tenorman episode is probably my favorite episode of South Park ever, and to bring him back as the king Ginger and then have Cartman's dad turn out to be his dad was incredible. Cartman crying at the very end because he's 1/2 ginger was also good, but kind of predictable.

Overall I've enjoyed the 200-201 episodes that the guys put together and can only hope that we get to see 200 more episodes before the show's run is over.

Update: Just read a couple places that it was indeed Comedy Central's decision, not Matt and Trey, to add the bleeps to this week's South Park. I'm still not sure whether they added just the bleeps when the name Muhammad was mentioned or if they were also responsible for the very long bleeps at the end of the episode... either way, stop being pussies Comedy Central... seriously, what the fuck. South Park has been making fun of all religions since the inception of the show and you now decide that it's not OK to talk about Muhammad. I get that you refused to show his actual cartoon image after 9/11, but you had already showed him in human form in a previous episode in 2001. Ohh, but 9/11 happened and the world was a different place after that... Ok, do you not think that people have protested and made empty threats based on the depictions of other religious figures in South Park's history? For fuck sake, Buddha was snorting coke while Jesus was looking at internet porn last night... Do you really think that those images didn't offend anyone?

I understand it's your network and you have the right to pick and choose what makes it to air, but if you start giving into these empty threats from all these different groups, in regards to South Park, the show is going to turn to shit and Matt and Trey would be smart to take it to another network that will give them the freedom you used to give them. Hell, at this point they could probably be very successful if they just launched the show on the internet where they can have complete freedom over what they choose to show. I understand that the image of Muhammad was censored last night as it was in last week's episode and a previous episode before that, and the fact that Tom Cruise turned into a big "censored" bar was part of the joke, but the bleeping of the word "Muhammad" and the bleeping of almost the entire conclusion of the show was absolutely ridiculous and un-necessary. The threats were made against Trey and Matt, not the network, it should be up to those guys if they feel threatened to the point where they must give in to these demands, and you and I both know they would never give in.

So at least let them run the unedited version on their website so that those of us that are fans of the show can see, and hear, exactly what they intended us to see/hear. And I pray to God (Jesus, Moses, Buddha and the Seaman on Tom Cruise's back, along with the Kiken, Mecha Streisand) that you don't continue to edit these shows to the point that they are almost completely ruined.

Ugh, sorry for the rant, it just really annoyed me when I found out that it was Comedy Central that edited the bleeps into the episode and that they weren't intentional. I knew the "censored" bar was part of the gag, but the bleeps were absolutely unnecessary. Seriously, fuck, it wasn't even Muhammad in the bear costume, it was Santa Claus!

South Park: 200 (4/14/10)

Here it is folks, the 200th episode of South Park. I'm actually kind of surprised that there have only been 200 episodes considering it's going on it's 14th season, but I guess they are short seasons so I shouldn't be that surprised. This is the episode where every celebrity that the show has ever made fun of is back with a class action lawsuit against the town. The synopsis as well as a list of most of the celebrities set to appear are listed below.

200

While on a school field trip, Stan accidentally insults Tom Cruise and sets off a chain reaction. Two hundred previously ridiculed celebrities stand strong in a class action lawsuit against the town of South Park. This could be the thing that destroys South Park forever.

List of celebrities appearing:
Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Kanye West, Oprah Winfrey, Russell Crowe, Sarah Jessica Parker, Osama bin Laden, Paris Hilton, Bono, Angelina Jolie, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Mickey Mouse, Rob Schneider, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Steve Irwin, Bill Clinton, Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers, John Travolta, Pope Benedict XVI, Barbra Streisand as Mecha-Streisand, John Edward, Robert Redford, Phil Collins, Hillary Rodham Clinton, David Blaine, Kathie Lee Gifford, Ben Affleck, William A. Donohue, Paul Watson, Al Gore, David Letterman, The Hardy Boys, Rosie O'Donnell, Michael Richards, Kurt Russell, Charlie Sheen, Tina Yothers, Tiger Woods, Michael Douglas, Martha Stewart, David Duchovny, Billy Bob Thornton, and Richard Dawkins

This week we saw the 200th episode of South Park and I'll be honest... I really liked it. Even though it was basically just their way of doing a clips show without actually doing a clips show, it was still new and fresh. Basically the boys are on a field trip at the fudge factory when they see Tom Cruise working as a Fudge Packer. Of course when they call him a Fudge Packer, he flips out and accuses them of making fun of him and decides to sue the town. He gathers up all of his celebrity friends, all of the ones we have seen on the show before, and they all file suit against the town of South Park, but Cruise as other motives. He tells the town that he will drop the lawsuit if they give him Mohammad, and as we all know there was a huge uproar with the Muslim community a few years ago when the prophet Mohammad was going to be shown on TV. So knowing that the town may get bombed if they show Mohammad at all, the town comes up with other ways to portray him, basically instead of showing a fake cartoon character of what Matt and Trey decide Mohammad would look like, they essentially ridicule him more by portraying him as a u-haul truck and a giant stuffed bear (mascot costume).

So while Tom Cruise is meeting with his celebrity friends, Jennifer Lopez shows up... yep, on Cartman's hand. And it turns out that it's not Jennifer Lopez at all, but Mitch Connor and he's trying, along with Tom Cruise and the rest of the celebrities, to steal Mohammad's Goo, which he uses to make it so he cannot be made fun of by anyone. When Cartman finds this out he's pretty pissed because he thought that Jennifer Lopez was trying to get some sweet lawsuit money, not some dude's Goo. So between all the bickering, Mitch breaks it to Cartman that the town lied to him about who his father really is, which leads Cartman on a little side plot to find out who his father is by interrogating Mr. Hat.

And of course, back to the Mohammad storyline, there is an extremist group that claims they will set off bombs all around South Park if the town gives Mohammad to the celebrities instead of them. It turns out these people are the gingers, they want the Goo as well. So seeing as how the town may not give the celebrities Mohammad anymore, they decide to resurrect mecha-streisand, but of course she's new and improved... and she's pissed. And it was at this part that I'm pretty sure Rob Reiner yelled out "Release the Kiken" or "Release the Kyken" (not really sure how to spell Kike, and yes I mean the derogatory term for jews)... did I hear this right? I mean, I'm not Jewish so I'm not really offended, I just want to make sure I heard that right.

And just after that is where my DVR decided to cut off... [Cartman voice] Laaaaaaaaaame.

So did they announce who Cartman's real father is? Did it say "To Be Continued", what did I miss at the end? I'll catch it on southparkstudios.com later today, but I'm dying to know.

Overall I thought it was a great 200th episode, a cool way to do a clip show without doing a clip show. Still not as good as Randy hopping around on his balls, but I think that episode will go down as one of the classics.

South Park: You Have 0 Friends (4/7/10)

Looks like this week's South Park revolves around Facebook. So far this season has been pretty incredible so hopefully we'll get another quality episode tonight. Below you'll find the plot synopsis, TVguide.com doesn't have one listed today so I hope this one is correct.

You Have 0 Friends

Stan and Kyle have been through so much together over the years, but it all means nothing if Stan won't "friend" Kyle on Facebook.

Kyle "friended" the wrong person and now all of his old friends are deserting him. His situation is desperate. Kyle looks for help from the one person who has always been there for him.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later and I think this weeks episode of South Park was the first dud of the season, at least for me. The plot followed Stan as he tried to avoid signing up for Facebook because he didn't want to get sucked into it, but when Kyle and Cartman setup an account for him he's forced to add pretty much everyone around him as a friend. This leads to him getting sucked into Facebook, literally, to confront his out of control profile. Meanwhile, Kyle is dealing with the fact that he's losing all his Facebook friends due to the fact that he "friended" an unpopular kid who had 0 friends.

I was pretty disappointed this week, especially coming off such an epic episode last week. I just didn't find this one as funny and amusing as the previous 2, but there's always a few each season that miss the mark. Hopefully next week things will be back on track and we'll get another classic episode.
