Medal of Honor Beta First Impressions

Thanks to the generosity of a random person on Twitter, I obtained a beta key for the latest Medal of Honor game that is set to come out in a few months so I thought I'd give you guys my first impressions. Now keep in mind that I've only had about an hour or so with the game so I haven't gotten to experience everything there is to offer yet, and plus it's a beta so not everything is there and polished.

The beta is multiplayer only and contains 2 different game modes that you can play, one is team deathmatch and the other is sort of an attack and defend type game, similar to "war" from Call of Duty: World at War and CoD3, I'll get into the game modes more in a minute. The game starts off and you can go through and edit your guns. You only have a choice of 3 different load outs to start, a rifleman, a specialist and a sniper and each of these classes only has 1 gun available at the beginning as far as I could tell. You have to level up in order to unlock new guns and attachments, similar to MW2. So once I figured out the menu system and turned up my sensitivity, it was time to play.

I jumped right into a quick match which dumped me in the "war" type game (I can't remember what it's called at the moment). It's still a team based game, but one team is trying to defend certain areas while the other team is trying to take them over. The offensive team must take over one area before they can move onto the next as they slowly make their way from one end of the map to the other. I actually thought this game mode was pretty fun, but I did have one big problem with it that could kill the whole game for me... the respawning. It got to a point where someone on the other team got right behind our spawn and just sat there. As we respawned in the same spot over and over again this guy would just kill us instantly. I know when you get to certain spots on the map you can choose to respawn in your base or on the frontlines, but each spawn seemed to only have one set location rather than randomizing it a bit, so even when the teams switched and I was on the other team I got trapped in spawn camper hell. For me to really enjoy and play this game they are going to have to rethink the respawns and figure out a way to curb the spawn campers. On a positive note I didn't seem to have the same problem when playing a team deathmatch game though.

Aside from the game modes, lets talk about gameplay. The multiplayer aspect of Medal of Honor is being developed by Dice, the same guys that brought you Battlefield Bad Company 2 and if you've read my review of Bad Company 2 you already know where this is heading... kind of. Coming off of Modern Warfare 2, I was not a fan of Bad Company 2's multiplayer so going into Medal of Honor I was pretty worried. When I first started playing I was very annoyed with it because it wasn't Modern Warfare 2, but once I convinced myself that it wasn't, I was able to get into it a bit more. I like the scale of things in MoH much better than Bad Company 2 so that was a nice change, but the control aspect that I hated the most in Bad Company 2 is very much alive in MoH... you can't strafe when you're running. I think this is just something I've got to get over because the more I think about it the more it seems realistic that you wouldn't be able to strafe while running full speed ahead, but it doesn't help that I've been used to it for years now in the CoD series. So strafing aside I think I could grow to like this one, but I hope the single player is really good because I could still see myself going back to CoD when Black Ops comes out, but I will probably pick up Medal of Honor in the meantime.

I'll play a lot more this weekend and see if my perspective on the game changes, but I think I got the gist of it after a few sessions last night.

Gears of War 3 E3 Demo Footage

Here is the demo footage that was shown at E3 earlier this week for Gears of War 3. I never really cared for the multiplayer aspect of Gears of War (as far as team deathmatch, deathmatch etc), but I am looking forward to playing the campaign co-op with up to 4 people.

Microsoft Kinect (formerly Project Natal) and Motion Gaming

I remember seeing Nintendo's Wii-mote for the first time a few years ago (whenever it came out) and thinking that this motion thing would never catch on and was just a gimmick. Obviously I couldn't have been more wrong in the fact that it wouldn't catch on considering that the Wii is the best selling system on the market right now, but I still stand by my statement that it's just a gimmick. I understand that not all "gamers" these days are hardcore gamers like I would consider myself, actually most of them are younger kids and more casual gamers, so I can see why this new era of motion sensing games appeals to them... I guess. There are no complex button layouts or complicated button combos, just simple movements that you would do in real life if you were trying to do the same thing. For example Wii Sports, there's no holding button A then pressing the right trigger or what not to swing a golf club like Tiger Woods, you simple bend over and swing the golf club like you would if you were outside playing golf. Since it's so easy to pick up and play it's obvious that it would appeal to the casual gamer, but will the "hardcore" gamers venture away from their controllers/keyboards/mice?

I can tell you right now that I will not be picking up the Microsoft Kinect unless the price point is under $100 and there is some game that blows my mind... and I don't see either of those things happening. The only reason I have a Wii is because my girlfriend doesn't like playing Xbox or any games using the standard controller, so it was a way for us to do something together that we both enjoyed and were decent at. Eventually my Wii died and I just haven't cared to get it fixed. After about 6 months it lost its appeal anyways and collected dust, and from people I've talked to, this is the scenario with a lot of Wii's. The games just aren't that "good", there's only a handful of fun games that you can play by yourself and in order for the rest of the games to be fun you need to have a group of people over. So ok, if you throw parties all the time and the Wii is the life of the party then I could see the need for one, but when it's just me sitting around my apartment and I want to play a game I'm not reaching for Wario Ware... and this is what's going to happen with Microsoft's Kinect and eventually Playstation Move (or whatever it's called).

Both companies are trying to bite off a piece of Nintendo's marketshare by incorporating motion sensing gaming into their existing systems. Sony has taken a more direct route and simply copied Nintendo's Wii-mote however it seems they've improved on a few things and Microsoft has gone a different route and kind of copied Playstation's EyeToy while also making some improvements, but I don't think that either one is going to be as successful as Nintendo. Nintendo is known for being a younger system, meaning that they cater to a younger and more casual crowd than Sony and Microsoft, so the motion sensing gaming worked perfectly for them. Most "hardcore" gamers on Xbox 360 or PS3 are not looking to flail around ridiculously in order to play Modern Warfare 2 or Socom. I know, Modern Warfare 2 has no plans of coming to Kinect or Move, but the next Socom does and as much as Sony wants people to believe it will be just like aiming down a gun and shooting, I think it's going to be more annoying than anything. I've played the Call of Duty games on the Wii and the control scheme is terrible for me, so I'm not sure that Socom can redeem the experience I had with a first person shooter and motion sensing gaming.

I only bring this up because Microsoft had a big event last night for the Kinect and it sounds like a lot of people were underwhelmed by what they saw, or maybe just by the event in general. I don't think this technology will ever replace the keyboard/mouse or controller as an input device for "hardcore" gamers, but I'm sure some more casual gamers may pick it up or even just those that tend to have lots of parties... I still don't think the add-ons for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 are going to do nearly as well as the Wii only because those people looking for a casual game system aren't going to be buying those systems.

So what do you think of all this motion sensing gaming coming out? Will you be picking up the Kinect or Move?

Bad Company 2 vs. Modern Warfare 2

I finally got around to picking up Battlefield: Bad Company 2 last week and managed to get through the entire single player campaign and play a good amount of multiplayer by Saturday so I figured it was as good a time as any to give my impressions on the game, which will basically turn into a comparison between the game and Modern Warfare 2.

I know that BF:BC2 has been out for a little while now and this is probably not going to matter to most of you, but if you're still on the fence about it maybe it'll help you down.

I'll be honest here, I'm a huge fan of Modern Warfare 2. I've been a fan of Infinity Ward's work in the Call of Duty series since the beginning so naturally MW2 gets most of my attention and other games need to live up to what I've come to expect from those games. I understand that a lot of people like to complain about MW2's multiplayer being "broken" yet I can only personally think of one thing that is actually broken to me (the fact that the pavelow doesn't count towards your kill streak), the other things people are complaining about are trival and I think people just need to realize that, that's how the game is, adapt. And because of that, a lot of people were recommending people to pick up Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for a more balanced multiplayer game. Well, I took their advice since I was able to score the game for around $25 after price matching and some Best Buy reward zone certificates.

Check out my impressions of the multiplayer and single player campaign for Bad Company 2 compared to Modern Warfare 2 after the jump.

Gears of War 3 Coming April 5, 2011

Those of you that are fans of the Epic series Gears of War will be happy to know that Gears of War 3 will be released for the Xbox 360 on April 5th, 2011. Cliffy B (as he hates to be called) made the announcement and debuted the first trailer on Jimmy Fallon's show last night. As he mentioned though, this is probably one of the worst kept secrets in the gaming industry, especially since Cliff was supposed to make the announcement last Thursday on the show, but got bumped because Justin Beiber made an appearance, and because Microsoft apparently forgot that they had some dashboard ads setup to show Friday morning (after the announcement was supposed to be made), everyone got an early glimpse when they turned on their Xbox. Now, they didn't get the trailer though, just an ad, so the trailer was premiered last night and I will post it up later today (currently blocked from streaming video). But in the meantime I figured I'd give you the latest on the release date, April 5th, 2011 for the US and April 7th for Japan with Europe getting it on April 8th.

So are you guys excited for another installment in the series? Personally I'm a little on the fence. I liked the first one and played a lot of multiplayer, but then when GoW2 came out I couldn't get back into the multiplayer because I was too obsessed with CoD4: Modern Warfare. So with Gears 3 coming out next year, I'm sure I'll pick it up for at least the single player, but may not get back into the multiplayer unless there's something groundbreaking that really keeps me hooked. Horde mode was a nice addition in part 2 that kept me playing for a little longer than I would have, but I'm going to need a little more if it's going to take over Modern Warfare 2...
